A place at the table

1. One case of food insecurity that we can see is when the documentary goes to the life of Barbie.  She has to ride two buses and travel more than an hour in each direction to shop at a fully stocked supermarket. She was mad about how the government sees that 1 day with no food is not starving. However, in her eyes and the way she feels, she does. Her food stamps last for 3 weeks at the most and for the last week, she becomes crazy because she has to manage her amount. She said that since she was 2 dollars over the income limit so she couldn’t qualify for food stamps. once strategy she has is that she has to take a little from one day to put into another. Barbie’s situation changes as in the beginning she had food stamps and didn’t have to worry about her kid’s lunch, but now since she got a fulltime job and doesn’t apply for stamps anymore, she has to worry about their lunches now. Another case of food insecurity is when we get a look into the life of Rosie’s family. her mom tried to get government assistance but was rejected. She makes about 120$ every 2 weeks and she has a family of 7 so its hard to manage. they don’t feel too good about being food insecure as they don’t like the feeling. They had to be without vegetables for a while, they run out of milk, and they eat dry cereal instead. They sometimes run out of food and when they do they try to ask friends for some. Rosie’s family situation changes as they get some food bags later on in the documentary, it contains food items like cans or instant noodles and such as the like. They have about 30 jars of peanut butter  as well. Her family’s life changes as they have more food now and dont have to worry as much.

2. My reaction to this movie was surprised. I thought it was only third world countries that had a big problem with food insecurity but surprisingly the USA is ranked number 1 for this problem. Some information I was surprised by was when they showed us that one out of every two kids, end up on food assistance once in their childhood. This surprised me as I didn’t know it was this big of a problem in the USA. I thought it would be less. I thought food insecurity was just not having enough food to eat but the effects of it are bigger. Kids must go to bed hungry and have to eat processed food compared to healthy food cause its cheaper and will fill you up more. This then leads to obesity problems and so on.

3. If I were a politician or policymaker, I guess I would try to increase the number of food stamps for food-insecure families. Another thing I would try is to ask the big greedy corporations to donate more to food banks or programs

Food 12 – Food Waste Plan

I don’t think I cause a lot of food waste in my daily life, at home I try to eat everything my parents make or if I am making something, I try to buy the exact ingredients from the store, if I am washing dishes I try to not let the food scraps go down the sink instead I use the stopper thing that collects the food and put it in the compost bin. At school, I try to compost as well as there are bins that make it easy to identify what goes in which bin. When I’m going out with friends, I try not to overorder things and if I can’t finish what I ordered, my friends will help me out to finish it. I try to reduce food waste anywhere in my life.

I can improve by going out to eat less with friends, even if going out is fast and easy. I can also improve on trying to repair things instead of throwing it out like straps if they break down. I can also improve on starting to take reusable bags to the store instead of using the plastic ones they give at the store.

I think canning food is a good choice to cut down on waste as fruits are less likely to go bad if they are stored properly, this means you don’t have to throw them out as often or buy them as often which saves waste in the end. I will also try to label the names and dates of the foods to know what and when they will expire so I don’t have to randomly guess which ones to throw out. I think my waste reduction is okay for now but I can definitely improve on it in the future just like how everyone else can.

Safety first- a visual guide

  1. Fire (i.e. what to do if one happens)
-In the event you do catch fire, follow the Stop, Drop, Roll Principal. Don’t run if your clothing catches fire – stop where you are, drop to the ground, and roll,”
-In the case you do have a fire, have a fire extinguisher nearby, it can make the difference between an easy to clean up burned pan and a kitchen engulfed in flames. Be sure you know how to use it.

  2. Burns/Scalds (i.e. how to treat)
-Run cool tap water over the Burn
-Do not put ice or butter on the burned area as these it doesn’t help and can damage the skin tissue.

  3. Chemicals
-Store chemicals away from food storage and contact areas
    -Don’t mix chemicals together

  4. Slips/Trips/Falls (i.e. how to prevent)
-Watch where you are walking as you might trip on somthing dropped
    -Dont cook on wet floors

  6. Heavy Lifting (i.e. of a bag of flour)
-Keep your head up when handling the load. Look ahead, not down at the load, once it has been held securely.
-Do not lift with your back bended

  7. How to Prevent Food Poisoning
-Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (warm or cold) and dry them before handling food, after handling raw food  – and after touching the bin, going to the toilet, blowing your nose or touching animals
-keep raw meat separate from other ingredients

  8. Waste Management
    – After peeling vegetables or cracking egg shells, make sure to put them in the green waste bin and not the garbage.
-Use rags instead of paper towels, in the kitchen, reducing waste as they can be washed and reused.

Two things I could improve on would be to make separate paragraphs and work on my conflict.
Two things I did well on was expressing my emotions and using rhyme in the beginning.

2.

”there was this beautiful glass bridge in the sky”

”I went on vacation to China this summer to visit family and friends. I also went sightseeing. I went to tour the birthplace of my parents”

experience, heaven and beautiful

i chose these  words because they sum up the whole story and they are powerful as u can feel what the story is about. the vacation i went on were an experience, it was heaven and it was beautiful. This tells me that you don’t need a lot of words or a long story to tell a good poem. I learned that a short sentence or a couple of words can be as good as a phrase

3.

it was like heaven

Water rocket journal

What have you learned about the history of rockets and space travel? Write a summary on the blog about something or someone you found interesting and tell why.

I learned that it Came a long way starting from  a model pigeon, that used steam to propel it forward in the 4th century B.C, to making full model rockets in the 20th century A.D. One thing I found interesting is that the soviets sent a dog to space

Now that you know about the basic parts of a rocket and what they do, write about each part and its importance in your own words. What will be different on your water rocket than on a “real” rocket and why?

Nose Cone: is important because it is the first part that goes in the air, it’s what helps the rocket punch through the earth

payload: the payload is an optional part, but important if u want to transfer some object or subject

Propulsion: is important because it what makes the rocket go up

Fins: fins are important to help stabilize the rocket so it goes straight and doesn’t wobble

Write a little on the blog about how to find the Center of Pressure and the Center of Gravity on your rocket and why they are important.

Center Of pressure: to find the center of pressure make a cardboard cutout of your rocket. Take the cardboard rocket and balance it on a ruler . Mark where it balances then mark the same spot on your real rocket

Center of gravity : get a piece of string and tie it around your rocket, using the string to hold the rocket and see if it balances, if it doesn’t, move the string closer to the fins or the nose one until it balances

The center of gravity is what makes the rocket stay balanced and the center of pressure. The center of pressure is important because it’s the point against which the wind appears to push.

Based on what you have learned about rocket design (nose cone & fins) describe what your rocket will look like and why you chose that design on the blog. My rocket will look like this, with a nose cone and 4 fins at the bottom to stabilize it

Principle Of Flights

  1. Draw a path of trajectory of your rocket

2. Which force is acting on the rocket at the moment of launch? (use arrows to indicate direction)

3.  As the rocket was half-way up, which force(s) is/are acting on the rocket?

Drag,Thrust,weight,lift

4. As the rocket begins to veer into another direction, which force is acting on the rocket? Explain why this is happening.

when the thrust goes down  so does the  lift which makes drag and weight pull the rocket down to the ground.

5.(A) Did some rockets work better than others?

yes all of them were different in some way, some went more far some went less far

5. (B)How does the shape of the nose and fin effect the trajectory of the rocket?

it helps stabilizes it, however if it is uneven or to heavy it will weight the ship down

5.(C)Explain in terms of the four forces that act on a rocket ship.

the fin can help the lift by making a a low pressure fast air zone

it can make the weight and drag bigger depending on shape and material

it can  effect thrust by cutting through the air

                   ROCKET SIMULATIONS

  1. What was your maximum height and speed? What was the Mass, Thrust and Thrust time on your high score?

2. Why does the rocket fling around the moon/Earth? What is an orbit?

Because gravity weights the rocket down

An orbit is when an object goes around and around and around another object\

3 .What is the co-efficient of drag?

4.
