Paragraph:

‘A helping hand’ analysis

With the poem ‘A helping hand’ Miroslav Holub uses irony to compare how we as society are quick to help and do things that will later benefit ourselves but hesitates to help other people that we will not profit from. So, we have the ability to do amazing things. But we don’t when it comes to certain people, people who we cannot profit from.

In the beginning the poet shows how humans have turned “grass…into corn” (1,2) which is implying to the agriculture revolution and how humans used science to achieve those things. Then later mentions how we also “gave a helping hand to fire and it turned into a rocket” (3,4) which implies to the industrial revolution. “We gave a helping hand” repeats throughout the poem, it represents how we are doing things that benefit others. But those do not profit everyone and only helps a few people. In those first four lines the poet demonstrates how we are capable of helping and celebrates the human progress throughout time and with the punctuation, it emphasizes the ends of each line. It reveals the human capacity to change our environment.

Then as the poem goes on with the lines: “Hesitatingly, cautiously,” (5,6) the mood of the poem shifts and shows how society acts with helping other people. We act after thinking carefully and we do not help right away. The “some people” (9) indicates to more privileged people and the ones who do not get help from it are the poor, people who comes from a different religion or has a different skin colour. For example, with the situation going on in Ukraine, people are showing support and are more aware of it versus the problem occurring in Sudan, since people are not aware of the problems they have there, the people there are not getting help. We are also capable to stop world hunger, poverty, or climate change, it is just that we choose not to. The poem shows the reality of how our world is like. With the ellipsis added at the end of the line, the poet hints to the audience to think about who those “some people” may be.

We as society are capable of helping everyone and do amazing things but most people choose not to do so just because it would not benefit them later, and so not everyone is helped. The ones that really need help are not getting much help and people who already have much more than what they need, still profit from others.

One Pager Project- Character: Wab

Intro sentence:

For this project I chose to explain the character Wab and explore her developments throughout the book and many moments on how she has changed. I find this character interesting because she, as the oldest girl in the group (not including Minerva) is not someone who you talked a lot to others. But she did get a whole chapter to herself, her coming-to story. I think that during that chapter, I learned a lot about her character and personality. She comes off as someone tough, but there are still times where she was scared, she, like the others just grew up too fast. Will she overcome her fears?

Indigenous Exploration- “Cultural Appropriation”

Indigenous Exploration- “Cultural Appropriation”

Intro:

Welcome to First Nations Findings, the topic for todays show is first nations cultural appropriation, we will be explaining this issue and sharing stories and cases where first nations have been cultural appropriated .For this project I worked with Sofia and we used audacity for recording the podcast and bensound for the music.

Reflection-

Experiences while creating this project:

This was a good experience, it wasn’t my first making a podcast but it is a first for making a podcast I English. Researching information for this project seemed to be much easier with the help of Ms. Henderson, we had more reliable sources and each source we found gave new information. Recording with someone new was also nice, we got along well and worked productively during the project.

Group’s path from start to final product in researching the topic:

At the start we did not know the topic really well ourselves but once we found more and more information about it we understood the issue much more with the stories and cases we read or watched. Every article or video had so much information in each one so, the research did not take as long as it does usually.

Obstacles we faced and things we learned while recording:

Sometimes it took multiple tries when recording because there could be background noises from others if we’re not in the quiet rooms and we easily mess up our lines from time to time. We knew how to use Audacity but there were still some parts we needed help on, we had trouble organizing it and making sure we had 6 minutes or more. At first we thought we had enough lines to last 6 minutes but we still had a lot to go. So we tried fitting more lines in-between the other clips but we did not have enough time to organize them, so it took a while to reorganize all the audio clips. Other than that everything else went quite well, I think we did a great job since we both learned something new during this project.

Core Competency:

Option 1Critical Thinking…

How does your artifact (audio recording) tie in with what you have learned/knew before about the topic/issue? How has your thinking changed? What made it change?

I have worked with Audacity before so it was not too hard for me. But it is still sometimes difficult to edit the clips and requires lots of patience. I am amazed by how people can edit recordings or videos as a job, it takes lots of time too. I used to think that editing a few clips were very easy. But it takes time even if you are experienced. Before this project I was not so familiar with this issue. Even though in the past I have learned a lot about first nations cultures. But I did not learn much about the issues. I learned people know about this issue but no one does anything. It really is important we raise more awareness about these cases. “Words are important but we need action”. After reading these articles and watching the videos. I was learned so many new things about what is happening in the indigenous communities.

Visual text assignment

The following is an exploration of selfishness and the lack of collaboration through the picture “We and I” by Steve Cutts which he uses satire to expose the problems in our society today and the theme of the lack of inclusivity between people in our society referencing the five people on the boat .

Image: “We and I” by Steve Cutts

Intro:

This picture is called “We and I” and it is made by Steve Cutts, and it shows in the picture the lack of collaboration and teamwork and even selfishness. When you first look at it you see five people on a big boat but all of them are making their own boats and they are just slowly tearing the boat. But once you look more into it you can see how it would what the artist is showing and how it relates to our society.

Explanatory of “We and I”

This image shows how the five people on the boat lack collaboration, teamwork, and inclusivity, how selfish they are and how they only think about themselves. As you can see, five people are in the ocean or sea and there is a huge storm. Their boat is broken, yet they keep taking the boat apart and each of them is in an area to themselves keeping a good distance from the others. So that just lowers the chance of survival for all five of them, if they were to work together things would turn out better. All of them looks upset, stubborn, or just mad. The artist used satire to show the connections between this picture and real life. For example, the big boat is symbolic to society and the waves in the ocean represent the problems we have in society. Those problems could be climate change, racism, and more. The five people on the boat represent how people in our society cannot seem to work together to fix the problems which are affecting all of us. Now people are becoming more selfish and only thinking of themselves and their own desires. That is how the problems occur, because we are not working together to solve them. So, in the end this picture shows how our society is like a boat stuck in a storm in an ocean because we cannot work together and solve the problems, instead we just think about what we can do to save ourselves and not think about how it affects everyone else.

Electrical House Project

Electric House Project

Intro to the project:

For this project me and my partner Danica made an electric house with 4 rooms, 2 parallel rooms and 2 series rooms. While making our electric house we went through quite a few problems. We tried to focus on building the circuits but also make the house looks nice with some decorations at the same time. But  then we got a little carried away with the decorating.

Solution Fluency Questions

Define: While me and my partner were testing out the lightbulbs the biggest problem was making sure the lightbulbs did not burn out in the middle of the project. There’s really not a specific way we can control that but we try to test it less often or when we do we only test it for a small amount of time. A problem we could fix is how to keep the battery and the wires connected so that all the lights would work.

Dream: The problem for our electric house was needing one person the hold the battery and wires together and the other testing the lights, it was sometimes harder so test the lights that way since there could be a problem and needs both of us to fix it. So we wanted to change that by making a battery holder with tubes at the top so that the wires could just slip into the battery.

Deliver: Me and my partner made a battery holder that was not too big so that it can be easy to put on our house and won’t weigh it down. So the battery holder could hold the wires and the battery together and a small box for the battery. It is now easier to keep the battery and the wires together while we test out the lights.

Debrief: So in the end our project worked out quite well and all the lights are working too. The electric house looks very nice and it was a fun experience to have. We went through a lot and it was not the easiest but we still learned how to overcome and finish everything. Me and my partner successfully finished our 3D print and all the circuits in our electric house.
