Artifacts of Learning

Science 9 was fun. I really liked the labs but talking about reproduction was a bit awkward.  My goals coming in this class were to get a bit smarter and learn how certain things worked so i can use that information and fix the lights at my house or even make a robot.

Meeting  Catherine Nakabugo:
In Science this year we met Catherine Nakabugo, she is a teacher and we got to hear her speak about poverty in Uganda, girls and education and going to school, survival and going to school, and Climate Change.

She mentioned that some girls need to get water so they dont go to school, also that some girls get married young, have children young and dont go to school.

What she said resonated with me because I have Indigenous ancrestory and my people had a hard time getting an education.

We hope that if she reaches out to other courntries help and financial aid that other countries could girls in Uganda.

What I learned so far:

Chemistry

  • Chemical reactions

  • The elements

(I know these are magic elements but i can’t put the periodic table due to the next catagory.)

  • Periodic Table, Groups and Families

Physics

  • Resistance, Voltage, Current , Ohms Law

  • How to read resistance colours, Voltmeters and Ammeters

  • How to make a circuit

  • Battery with fruits

Biology

  • Cell Reproduction
  • Asexual/Sexual Reproduction
  • Cell Superheros

Climate

  • Abiotic/Biotic
  • Geosphere
  • Biosphere
  • Hydrosphere
  • Atmosphere
  • Maritimes

  1. A summary of what you learned so far.  Include:
    1. Skills you developed
I learned a lot about DNA, so I understand more about reroduction both asexual and sexual (plants, humans, animal)
    2. An example of those skills in action
I understand how doctors would be able to replace skin because they make stem cells into new cells and they can make new skin to help people who have been burned.
    3. How you feel you have met your learning goals
I was very excited to take Science this year and I thought I would not understand a lot but I did understand a lot. In the end I really liked it.
  2. A debrief of the experience:
    1. How the course went
I think the course went well, it was very interesting, some things were awkward to learn about but I am glad I have learned something new. I enjoyed learning about the elements the most.
    2. What you did well / what you can improve
I am really glad I didnt get hurt during any of the experiments.
Something that I can improve in is learning more science.

      1. How you felt about the connections-based learning experience
I  liked all of the hands on learning like like making the edible DNA, Learning about climate change and I learned a lot talking to Catherine Nakabugo about climate, and I learned a lot about mitosis and myosis.

paper mache award process

This is the progress of the award, (sorry that its not the whole process).

It was difficult to make the head, neck, heart pieces, and making it hollow.

First was the base its just a circle, then the neck it was pretty difficult to get the proportions, the head was really difficult but i got help from my friend, then it dried and i had to make it hollow so it didn’t explode, and the heart peices were difficult cause of their size and design there was a 5 pointed star, and a sun but they broke.

I glazed it in Sourcerer’s Stone, Unicorn Horn, Fairy Rose, Opal, Azure Dream, and Honeydew.

monster mug final

The shape was most difficult because making a tear drop shape out of a cylender is hard to do. I learnt that making a mug is hard and people that make pottery should get more credit. I would use overglaze istead of underglaze and use the wheel.

Monster Mug

My Monster Mug in progress pictures.

What is it?:

it’s a mug in the shape of a Slime.

What was difficult?:

Making it teardrop shaped, making the eyes, making sure it doesn’t crack or dry up, and then covering those cracks.

I tried to make it look cute, because if it was scary or gross I would not be comfortable in the same room as it, let alone drinking out of it.

Currents from the kitchen

  1. Purpose: Which fruit will produce the most electric voltage?
  2. Hypothesis: We will get electricity when we connect the right fruit to the wires, like an orange
  3. Material:  1 voltmeter, 2 wires. 1 nail, 1 copper strip, a lemon, an orange and potato
  4. Procedure:  We connected the wires to the voltmeter, put the copper strip and nail in the fruit and connect the wires from the voltmeter to the copper strip and nail.
  5. Reasoning/Why:  Because oranges are citric

Lemon: 0.5V

Orange: 0.2V

Potato: 0.5V

  • Electron are flowing because of wires, the copper strip and the chemical that makes certain fruits and veggies starchy or sour
  • Independent variable: fruits
  • Dependent variable: voltage
  • Controlled variable: copper strip, nail, wires
  • We could use iron and gold instead of the copper
  • Wires breaking, rotten fruits and vegetables
  • We could someday use apples , potatoes and lemons to charge our phones

Colours Weave Into A Spiral of Flame

April 2022, Clay and Paint

Chay Ralph

My coil pottery art is my personal, colourful  creation of a clay pot that I named Colours Weave Into A Spiral of Flame. I was tasked to create this pot and chose these colours because they remind me of an Easter basket.

In my work, I used clay and paint to make it colourful.

I spoke with Riverside Foods teacher Mr. Brett. I chose Mr. Brett because he know about healthy food, and I interested in making a healthy pizza place. I would start with a small pizza place and then I want to build a Mega PizzaPlex.

Can you explain your roles and responsibilities with your current position?
Mr. Brett’s responsibility as the Foods Teacher at Riverside is to help students make healthy food.

What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?
Mr. Brett had to work very hard to become a teacher. He had to go to school.

Why are you passionate about your job or role?
Mr. Brett said that he enjoys being a teacher and he enjoys teaching kids how to cook and eat healthy food in their homes.

Do you recommend a good pizza recipe?
Mr. Bretts favourite pizza is Sun Dried Tomatoes, Artichokes, Bell Peppers, Basil, Oregano. I told him that my favourite pizza is Pepperoni and Mushrooms.

What do you think of a Healthy PizzaPlex?
He said this is a interesting idea, he said he would come to my pizza plex if I make it!!

From this interview I learned that making a Healthy PizzaPlex would be a good idea. I am still really interested in healthy eating.
