Art Studio 11

Week 1, Feb 1, 2023 . Edublog Set Up

  1. To start off this week we did a scavenger hunt to get to know our classmates. Also, we did a circle talk to understand our classmate even more. Then we set up our Edublog’s.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was being worried if I knew anyone in my class and how the first week would go.
  3. My biggest success this week was learning about knew people that I would have not met before this class and getting excited to start off the semester  .
  4. My goal for next week is to try and be the most creative I can be and balance my  other classes.

Week 2, Feb 9 , 2023. Artist Trading Cards.

  1. This week we watched videos about how to create photomontage and collage. Also, we talked about what element of art is standing out and where our eyes focus on.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was being able to cut the little pieces of paper. This was a struggle because it took me longer then I thought it would take me, also being able to express my art with paper.
  3. My biggest success this week was learning about photomontage and being creative in this media.
  4. My goal for next week is to explore in mix media in my next couple of trading cards.

Week 2, Feb 10, 2023. Life Below Water- Research

The threats that coral reefs face is that they are a complex system that are made

12 Gorgeous Animals of the Coral Reef millions of individual species that work together. They are very sensitive to changes in their environment like water temperatures changing, ocean acidification and plastic that are in the ocean. Due to these changes large portions of the Great Barrier Reef are dying and many more reefs around the world. Other threats include overfishing, pollution and climate change.

How can we help there are many websites that you can donate to like The Ocean Agency. These organizations are fighting to help the coral reefs. One why to help if you are not able to donate is to reduce the amount of plastic that you are using and being aware of where it can be left

The dying coral reefs are not as beautiful as the ones that are thriving. They are not colourful and looked as if their colour has been bleached. What can be done to save coral reefs? - Living Oceans FoundationLiving Oceans Foundation

Week 3, Feb 16, 2023. What I have been up to this week.

  1. To start off this week we learned how to tooling with tin foil. This was a very interesting media that I really enjoyed. When I was creating it was fun to be able to make something pop out of the paper/tin foil. Later in the week we got given two pieces of wood and we had to make opposites attract. This idea I had to sit with for a minute because I did not know what to do. Then, my idea came to me, because I am a twin. I believe that even though we are twins we are very different but still connected. Running with this idea me and my brother are also pisces, so I wanted to paint two koi fish that are swimming in a circle. Also, this can represent yin and yang, which are two different beings that are connected. Lastly, I am painting one side with cool colours and the other with warm. This is my idea for opposites attract. Mx. Vittie had given the class a demo of mix media, which I have not started but I am planning to tomorrow.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was to come up with the idea for my opposites attract but as I said before I was able to find my path. One thing that I do struggle with and need to work on is being able know what principle and element I am using in my art.
  3. My biggest success this week was learning the media of tooling with tinfoil. This was a very fun media that I have not done before. I was able to use the element of shape and texture to in live my art. Also, I used the principle of contrast with the black paint to make my design to stand out.
  4. My goal for next week is to start my inquiry long term project, which I am planning on maybe using clay and the wheel.

Week 3, Feb 17, 2023. Long term Inquiry Project.

What would you like to investigate/make as a term-long project?

What I would like to investigate and make as a long term project is a set of a mug, plate, bowl and vase on the wheel or sculpting with clay. I would love to express my creativity with clay and get lost in the glazes and the wheel.

What would you need to get started?

The purpose of my project is being able to use a media that I do not have the privilege to do at home. Why I would want to make a set of kitchen items is because I will be able to use the creations almost everyday. Also, the art can last for a long time and can be brought with me when I have a place of my own. In addition, working with clay is a media I really enjoy and want to join a studio when I move on from high school so, this can be a project that can keep me busy this semester.

How will you begin this project?

How I will begin this project is remembering all the steps of working with clay this can be a challenge that I might face. How I can solve my problem is asking my teacher or my peers. Other challenges I can face is anything breaking in the process of firing my projects. How I can solve this problem is by connecting my pieces very well.

Week 4, Feb 23, 2023 Opposites attract.

1.To start off this week we learned how to transfer writing with tape and paper. I have not started this yet with a trading card but plan to soon. What I was up to this week was working on my opposites attract. I am planning on finishing it today. My process had changed as I have painted and some ideas were gained and losses. This week was only a three day week so I did not get a as much done as I wanted to.

2. My biggest struggle this week was repainting many things that I did not like and my ideas changing as I painted. Later, in my painting I started to add dotes which made the painting have more texture but this was a challenge. I over came it by using

a really small brush and a light hand.  Also, my biggest challenge was having a short week I did not get to start some trading cards that I wanted to.

3. My biggest success this week was being able to finish my opposites attract by the end of this day. Also, was letting my ideas flow and painting in a different stay then I normally do.

Week 5, March 2, 2023 Opposites attract, Artist Trading Cards and starting Inquiry.

  1. To start off this week I started a mix media artist trading card. The artistelement that I used was value and the principle that I used was unity. Also, I feel that I used compassion in this media too.  This was a great media that I really enjoyed. Mx. Vittie had bigger trading cards that I can use this media on a bigger canvas. This I might started next week or Freedom Friday if I have time. I finished my opposites attract and I am pretty happy with how it came out. It is not what I envisioned in the start but the changes that I made added more detail to the pieces. The elements and principles that I used for the opposites attract is balance, movement and colour and texture. Lastly, I want to start my Inquiry on Friday so that means working with clay and I will probably start candle light holders.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was finishing my opposites attract because when it comes to painting its hard for myself to know when I am done or can add more detail. How I fixed this problem was to take a break from it and starts a new project and them come back to it after. This is what worked best for me. Also, I really need to manage my time for the inquiry.
  3. My biggest success this week was learning that I love to make mix media art and this I will be continuing  on a bigger canvas. Hopefully I can start this on Friday or next week.

Week 7, March 30, 2023 Seahorse Stencil

  1. To start off this week I made a plan for my big stencil. Before I started to cut out my stencil I needed to make my plan on drawing paper. So, my stencil is a Seahorse and it will have five layers to the piece. As well, I made a baby seahorse so when I use my stencil it will be a school of seahorses on the canvas. What I learned is that each piece will need to have many
    layers.
  2. My biggest struggle is going to be able to cut out all the little pieces for the seahorse and not ripping the plastic. As well, it will be having to cut little details like circles and other hard shapes.
  3. My biggest success this week is learning more about stencils and having this skill and tool that I can work with in the future.

Week 8, April 6, 2023  Big trading card, Seahorse stencil and inquiry.

  1. To start off this four day week I finished my seahorse stencil. My stencil will be for life below water. The stencil ended up being a four part stencil. My plan is to do a school of them big and small. So on one stencil I have two seahorses to help spray paint them better. Next I worked on my bigger trading card which I am planning on doing mixed media. I have started on the background which I want the medium to be acrylic paint. Mx. Vittie helped me work on my colour theory before spring break  and I have been trying to introduce this in my painting. Lastly, I finally started on my inquiry project. This took be a long time because the clay for some reason intimidated me. So, I asked for Mx. Vittie’s help and they showed me a new technic that I have not used to make plates. I started on two and I will be hopefully glazing them sometime next week.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was trying to use more colour theory when painting. This is a struggle because I did not paint like this before but I am trying to improve and that can be a struggle.  When I am painting I have to understand the colours and where the light is coming from. This was my biggest struggle this week.
  3. My biggest success this week was finally speaking up for help and starting my inquiry project. I am super excited to work with clay and make some plates and other fun things that I can use at home. I want to make a set of plates and have funky flowers and almost doddle like drawing on them. This is what I thought was my biggest success this week.  I did not get a photo of the plates.

My top 5 trading cards:

All of my top 5 trading cards are different media except two are mixed media.

Week 9, April 12 2023, Larger trading card and new trading card

  1. To start off this short week a drew in my sketch book for the first day. Then I started on a new trading card using mixed media. I really enjoy mixed media art, so I also used new materials that have different texture and value. The last two days I worked on my Large Trading Card which i have not worked on in a couple of weeks. So, I started to add other media because it was only paint to start. This was very fun for the piece to final make more progress.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was not working on my inquiry which I need to dictate more time in. What I can do better is try and work on it every week.
  3. My biggest success this week was finally improving my larger trading card and seeing my ideas come to life.

Week 10, April 20 2023. Big Artist Trading Card

  1. To start off this very short week a worked on the Big Artist Trading card. Then I git started on the Life Below Water banner. I started with thebase stencil with orange. Then I also spray painted some red and orange/red ombre. I had to do this on two days that had a shorted class so hopefully I will finish next week.
  2. By biggest struggle this week was trying to not over spray on the poster. The second struggle was how many little sea horses I had to spray.
  3. My biggest success was finally starting the spray paint and learning how to spray paint.

Week 11, April 27, 2023 Finishing Poster.

  1. To start of this week I worked very hard to get my poster done. I worked on the stencils the previous week and I have five layers. I used many different colours and I have a school of seahorses.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was still trying to not over spray on the poster. Also, my biggest struggle is not having the stencil and the lines perfectly crisp.
  3. My biggest success was finishing the poster and over coming the over spray by making a stencil of little bubbles to hide the over spray.

    School of Seahorse

Seahorses are beautiful and amazing creatures that are unfortunately endangered. They live in seagrass beds, coral reefs and in shallow temperate and tropical waters. Seahorses are endangered because of illegal trade for ornamental display, aquarium fishes, and traditional Chinese medicine. More than 20 million seahorses are estimated to be traded each year for Chinese medicine. One of the biggest threats to seahorses are the loss of habitat.

How we can help is setting up marine protected areas, reining bad fishing practices and regulating wildlife trade. Also, the biggest thing we can do is help with their habitat which are majority coral reefs. We can help coral reefs by slowing our rate of pollution.

Week 12, May 4, 2023 Linoprint making and underglaze ceramics.

  1. To start off this week I worked on the underglaze of my ceramics for my inquiry project. Then the next day I worked on my sketch for my Lino print.  After, I was able to start my carving of my Lino print which I did a hummingbird and its natural feeding flower which is a honey suckle.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was understanding what I need to cut out that will help make the design pop because I have never done this before. Also, I struggled with the background and not wanting it to look busy but for my next side of the Lino print I want a fun and busy background.

My biggest success was carving out my hummingbird because this was the statement of the pieces and I really wanted it to come out well and it did which made me very happy.

Flora and fauna Lino print

The flora in my Lino print idea is the natural food of a

hummingbird which is honey suckle. The fauna is the hummingbird. I picked a hummingbird because of how beautiful they are and that they are always in my backyard during the summer. I wanted the hummingbird to be the negative space to make it pop when all the flowers in the back were positive. For the use of line was in the wings of my bird and the little details of giving the flowers movement with wavy lines.

Week 13, May 11, 2023 Lino Print making and Ceramics.

  1.  To start off this week I finished my Lino Print on the other side which I made bumble bee and a daisy.  After I craved I started to make prints. I decided that I wanted to have it to be gold which it came out very pretty on the paper. Then, I finished the underglaze of my ceramics which now I just have to put the clear glaze on top.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was understanding how to paint with the underglaze because it is thicker than acrylic paint.
  3. My biggest success was that I got a better understanding of how to carve the Lino print and what it will look like in the end when it is painted.

Week 14 May 18, 2023 Finishing Ceramics and Finishing big artist trading cards.

  1.  To start off this short week I finished my big artist trading card that I have been slowing working on. Vittie was able to frame it for me as well. This was great to finish to start working on my inquiry more. Then Vittie helped me clear glaze my pottery and they showed me how to use the wax to cover the bottom, how to dip the blows , and rub the bubbles of glaze to make the finish perfect. Then we started an exercise that hurt my brain.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was the activity that we did because it was very abstract and was out of my comfort  zone. This was very hard for me because it was more realism of my shoe in over lapping different angles.
  3. My biggest success was finishing two projects and now are able to work on more. This is a success for me because it took a long time to finish my big artist trading card.

Week 15 May 25, 2023 Starting new project and working with a new exercise.

  1. To start off this short week I started on a new pieces for my inquiry project. By using my Lino print stencil I stamped it into a plate that I made. Next week I will be under glazing and using a different top glaze to have a unique finish. I am planing on wanting to use a golden yellow underglaze  because I love the look with the bumble bee Lino print.  Also, I was thinking of using the unicorn horn top glaze. The following day we started on an exercise that made us practice different angles with china makers, using rule of three, and learning how to bring things forward and back.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was remembering how to use and work with clay. This time I forgot how hard it was and I do have long nails so I kept on scratching things.  I worked around this by having a paint brush and water and using a sponge.
  3. My biggest success this week was seeing my finished ceramics done. I did not get a chance to take photos but I will add them later. This was a success because I really enjoyed how it turned out and I got to learn more from doing the plates.

These are my process pictures. I have a photo of each good copy and what the lino print looked like.

Lino Print

Charlize Jacobsen

The Lino print project was a task that challenged the artist to use flora and fauna in the piece. Also, the piece needed to show the use of dark and light within the art. Lastly, in this art the artist needed to learn the skills of Lino.

With in the Lino print the materials that are used is a carving tool, the Lino print, glass board, a roller, and ink. The meaning be-hide the busy bee is that the earth is so beneficial to have such amazing pollinators that help with reproduction of plants, which produce oxygen for mammals. So, the bee and daisy symbolize the life that we as human need to help us have a better life and future. Without them we are just heading in a step in the wrong detraction. The process of a Lino print can be tedious with having to flip your brain and visualize the final product.

Week 16 June 1, 2023 Glazing Lino print ceramics

  1. To start off this week I started working trying to finish my artist trading cards. As well, I started to glaze my Lino print plate and I used a yellow/golden under glaze. After, I put on top the unicorn horn top glaze. Hopefully this will be fired at the end or next week. I am planning on wanting to do a life below artist trading card to help finish the three that I need.
  2. My biggest struggle this week trying to finish my nine trading cards. I will over come this idea by looking for more ideas online of styles that I can paint.
  3. My biggest success this week was glazing my Lino print plate. I was able to use a new glaze that I never used before and I am super exited to see how it comes out when it is fired.

Week 17, June 8, 2023. Working on a new project

  1. To start off this week I started a new art project that is a bigger mixed media piece. To start off I found a very cool magazine that was from the 70-80 from Canada. This helped with the foundation of my back found of the water that is fields of people and everything that is not water.  Then I also painted on top of this piece.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was understanding what I wanted to show with my new art work. As well, the direction I wanted to take with the piece.
  3. My biggest success was starting the project so I get something that I can look forward to each class to work on.

Week 18, June 15,2023 Finishing artist trading cards.

  1. To start off this week I worked on my new project that is very close in to being finished. Then I wanted to work on some of my trading cards because I need nine trading cards for my final project. I wanted to work with pencil crayons because I love the look of them when i draw flowers. Then I wanted to work with watercolour because Oliver inspired me with his orange he painted.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was trying to restart my Lino print Ceramic piece the glazed did not turn out the way I wanted to. It did not she the underglaze through and it lost the bee design.  So, I tried to restart but then I noticed the clay was too wet after I rolled it so I put it back and grabbed some harder clay. This rolled really well but I think my mistake was rolling it to thin because once I was finished remaking the dish it broke. I tried again and it broke so I smashed it and I will be trying again Friday.
  3. My biggest success this week was my water colour trading. This was my success because I have not ever really worked with water colour and it was a fun trading card to make.

Top 9 Artist Trading Cards

My top artist trading cards are in many different medias. I have two with watercolour, three with mixed media, I have one photomontage,  one collage, and lastly pencil crayon.

Long Term Inquiry process

When I started my inquiry I was ambitious in my plans and what I wanted to do. I thought that I would have the plans in making many pottery plates, bowls and cups but this was not the case. I was only able to make to plates that I use ever day for holding jewellery in my room.  I tried to make a plate with my Lino print and I wanted to use a glaze that will peak through but this did not happen and it was not able to show the Lino print underneath. How I over came this “fail” was learning on what went wrong and what I can do to fix it. Lastly, I was not able to make was many plates that I wanted because of my other project I had during the class. I do not think as the inquiry as a fail because I learned new skills with pottery and that is a success to me.

Charlize Jacobsen

My initial ideas for the inquiry was the same through the whole time but got modified a little about how many plates I was able to make. My idea did change because I had the impression I was going to be able to make a whole kitchen set, but that was not the case because I was busy with many other projects. What I learned the most with this inquiry is how much I love making ceramics and how much I want to explore the media more. Vittie taught me many skills to use that I have not used be more. Such as, using a stencil that the clay can form around and have a perfect plate. Also, I never used wax before to cover the bottom of the plate. Lastly, I learned how sometime the glaze does not always come out the way you wanted it to.

Inquiry Product 2

Second that I have for my Inquiry is my mixed media projects. These I really enjoyed working on and I was able to find that it is one of my favourite medias. I was able to express myself through this art form. I was able to learn new skills, such as, colour theory, and the rule of three. I enjoyed using old magazines from the 70-80s that have old advertisements that have a pop of colour. I also loved to paint on top to give different textures with in the art. Lastly, I was able to make two inquiry pieces that are very different from each other but still have the style that I enjoy.

Collaborative Studio Maintenance Project

For studio maintenance me and Oliver worked together to clean this space. The name of this space is the working table my the curving wheels. The space was super dirty with many random items on top that were out of place. How we collaboratively maintained this area was looking at where each piece went and finished it together. So, we divided and conceder the space. Why cleaning this space was important is because it is a place that people in the class can work yet it was covered and not a space people could use. This is why it contributed to the classroom environment by being cleaned.

Week 19, 2023 Last day of full class

  1. To start off this week I finished all my projects and started to post about them on my edublog. Doing my finishing touches can be hard because you have to know when you need to stop and add more. I was able to see all the pieces that I have made this semester and I can say that I am very happy with all the project I made.
  2. My biggest struggle this week was doing the last touches to everything and having to make artist statements about them. This can be hard for me because of having to write down my thinking when making the piece and what I learned. How I was able to over come this was thinking to when I was making the piece and that helped me tremendously.
  3. My biggest success was finishing all my projects and being able to see the final of everything. This was a great success because I was able to see how I improved during the semester but also finding the style that I enjoy to make the most.
