Community Connections

Rebecca Dingle (AKA Bex)

For my community connections project I had decided to interview Rebecca Dingle.

Bex, is a amazing woman that graduated from Centennial Secondary school and then later went to Langara College. Where she played college basketball and majored in criminology. During college, Bex’s summer job was being a border services agent at the YVR international airport. At the young age of 21 years old Bex was recruited to join the RCMP. Soon after Bex had to do a half a year of police training in Saskatchewan. Currently, Bex is a criminal investigator for Airdrie RCMP.

Why I chose to interview this individual.

I chose to interview Bex because she is a outstanding role model of mine and my family. As well, Bex is a police officer, I have always wanted to help my community and be a criminal investigator. In addition, being in the RCMP it is very male dominated. This did not affect her ability to be successful. Therefore, I interviewed Rebecca Dingle.

1. Why are you passionate about your job?

“I am passionate about my job because I get to interact with a wide variety of people on a daily basis and no one day is the same. I get to help make people and communities feel safe and I get to be a part of the process that holds people accountable for their wrongdoings.”

2. What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?

“I had to move to Saskatchewan and complete 6 months of extensive and intense police training.  After that at the age of 21 I moved to Alberta which and away from all my family and friends. I still had a lot to learn about policing in the field and life in general. Being young and a female meant that at times I had to work harder to prove my value and worth.”

3. What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

“I would give someone the following advice if they wanted to be a police officer: Be aware that you will be under a lot of scrutiny from the public.  The job can be both very rewarding but also very frustrating. You deal with people who are having bad days and you need to be able to process that as it becomes mentally draining. No day will be the same as the day before which is exciting and there are so many cool job specialities within policing that you can get into.”

 4. Would you be open to further contact from River side students and if so, how can they contact you?

“Yes, you can contact me through my email.” (rebeccadingle13@gmail.com)

5. Why did you chose to do the job that you have today?

“I chose to become a police officer because I liked the idea of helping people and keeping people safe. I liked that everyday would be different and that I could continually be working.”

6. What are the best aspects of your job?

“The best aspects of my job are helping people, my co-workers and keeping communities safe.”

After the Interview

What I have learnt from this interview with Rebecca Dingle. Firstly, is that being a police officer comes with rewards and disadvantage. Secondly, that no day will be the same and the job comes with many responsibility. Lastly, that one job that I will be interested in is being a criminal investigator.
