Banksy is an amazing artist who portrays respect in an interesting light. The pigeons represent white people who abuse privilege in America. We know this because we have seen signs like this during the American Civil liberties movement that started in the 1960’s. Closer to home, we know that white British Columbians were resistant to Asian Immigration in the early 1900’s and many signs looked like the ones that the pigeons are holding in Banksy’s image. The hummingbird represents someone who is different; colourful and not “white.” One can see that the pigeons have clear and smooth representation while the hummingbird has an unfocused and blurred view. This could represent that the pigeons have an easier life while the hummingbird struggles to get by in life. Another interpretation would be that the hummingbird is a recent immigrant. We have seen immigration backlash in both Canada and the USA in recent times. Next, we can see that the hummingbird has its back turned to the pigeons. This tells us that the hummingbird does not want any harm and is willing to walk away from a conflict. In addition, the pigeons outnumber and are much bigger than the little hummingbird. Again, this speaks to the inequality that minorities face every day against the majority. The hummingbird is needing allies. One hopes that a strong hawk or eagle will come and ensure that all birds are equal can fly together in peace and harmony. In conclusion, the pigeons can be interpreted as the privileged class who refuse to collaborate, will not be inclusive and ultimately have no respect for minorities.
