“A Private Experience” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a short story about ethnic and religious conflict. The mind map that I have made goes into depth of the meaning of eight elements of the story, showing my understanding of the story and of the elements that I talked about in my mind map. The meaning of the story was about two different characters that are total opposites that ended up in the middle of a riot, because of this they end up building a connection by helping one another to get out of the situation. Adichie showed this by stereotyping both characters; Chika being a well off, materialistic Igbo Cristian and the other woman coming off as a poor Hausa Muslim working in the market. This also is an allusion to Adichie’s TedTalk about single stories and that you can not just go off from what other people have made something or someone made to be. Nevertheless, they both are the same. In my mind map, I used icons that correlate with each element of the story to show my understanding. For setting, I did the icon of a little store because most of the story’s physical setting was in an abended store where Chika and the women hid to stay safe from the riots. Point of view I did an icon of a brain with an arrow because the point of view of the story is third person limited and we only know the thoughts of Chika. Therefore, I used that icon to show that I understand that we can only see the story from the perspective of Chika, the reason for we only know her thoughts. “Chika wonders if that’s all the women thinks of the riots if that is all she sees them as-evil. ” (pg. 47). For the Criticisms lens, I did an icon of a book and a lightbulb for the reason that I am criticizing the story while reading and the lightbulb is my idea. Furthermore, it is also me finding out information about Adichie because I did biographical as my critical lens. I choose the scale of the theme because I wanted to show the balance and peace that the world could have if everyone could respect people’s differences. For example, if that Igbo man did not run over the Holy Koran non of the events would have happened after that. Both religions are not that different they both have bibles they are just different, and they both believe in a God. They just have different beliefs and because of this, it alludes that they are so different. For conflict I did an icon with two swords to show that there are two sides of this riot, The swords are the same showing deep down both the side are the same. ‘”Riot! Trouble is coming, oh! They have killed a man!” Then people around her was running, pushing against one and other.” (pg.45). Characterisation I choose an icon that has three hands in a somewhat of a circle shape. The reason why I did this is that the circle symbolises, wholeness, connection, and perfection. And it represents the connection between both the main characters and how their character types complement each other. For symbolism, I did an icon of a scarf because the Hausa women’s scarf is arguably the more symbolic thing in the story. It represents the women’s culture and faith at the same to it is a symbol of Chika’s and her connection. The women used the scarf so they could sit down on the ground, pray, and tend to Chika’s wound. After the woman let Chika take it with her, even though she probably did not have another one. “But now, she turns to the women and adds, “May I keep your scarf? The bleeding might start again.” The woman looks for a moment as if she does not understand; then she nods.” (pg. 55). Finally, for the plot I chose to hands making a pinkie swear, I did this because I wanted to show the connection and trust again that Chika and the women had even though the reason why they ended up together was horrible and they were strangers they still ended up making a connection. I chose yellow and blue as the main colours of my mind map because those are the colours that make green, and the flag of Nigeria is green and white.
