Week 16 in Pre Cal 11 – Angles and rotation

This week in Pre-Calculus 11, we’ve gone a lot more in-depth about trigonometry. We learned about angle rotation and how it you can find different ratios. One thing I found very interesting was how Sin= Y over R. This ratio is equivalent to Sin= O over H but most of the ratio’s we know from grade ten have changed this year.

What I wanted to talk about was the cast rule and how we can tell which ratio’s will be negative/positive just from looking where they are.

These are some notes I went over with my tutor but I really like the way he explained it. Pretty much we can just consider Sin = Y Cos = X and Tan as Y/X. This makes it a lot easier when we’re thinking about the value of our variables. Sin will always be positive in Q1 and 2 as that is where Y is positive. Cos will be positive in Q1 and 4 as X is positive there and Tan will be positive in Q1 and Q3. This Is also easy to remember using the CAST rule where Q1 is all Q2 is Sin Q3 is Tan and Q4 is cos but I think this way of thinking helps give a bit better understanding to it.

Week 12 in Pre Cal – Simplifying Rational expressions

This week in Pre Calc 11, we reviewed fractions and began our unit on simplifying rational expressions. This unit has been pretty straightforward so far; the majority of it is just a review, but I still thought some things were pretty interesting.

On Friday we learned about the division of fractions with variables. We know from past years you can’t have a zero in the denominator spot with fractions so this changes some things.

For example, if you have a fraction like x-2/x-4 x can not equal positive four as that would make a zero pair in the denominator and make it equal to 0. This is not possible for these equations and they don’t even work in your calculator.

My biggest mistake this week was when we were doing review on fractions this week I didn’t realize when dividing fractions you need to use the reciprocal of the second fraction. I thought you could use either an this made the review questions a little difficult. I’m feeling much more confident in this unit after doing some review on the weekend.

Week 10 in Pre Cal – Graphing Quadratics

I was really struggling with this unit at first. I didn’t understand vertex or shift or any of that stuff. I specifically didn’t understand what vertex form was. Vertex form is the equation written for the graphing of a parabola. The actual equation is a(x-h)^2 + k. I was very confused by this equation i thought you would be solving for X like we’ve been in the past couple units but in realty this equation helps you solve for a which is a constant that determines whether the parabola opens upwards or downwards. H and K represent the vertex of your parabola’s location.

This equation is super helpful as it gives you the vertex right away. Once you know the vertex you can easily plot those points and use the line of symmetry rule to create the rest of the parabola.

Let’s say we have the quadratic equation
y=2(x−3)^2+1

we know:

The vertex is at (3,1) because of the (x−3) and the +1.

The parabola opens upward because the number in front, a=2 is positive.

From here, you can easily graph your parabola, and this form can help you every time you graph. I didn’t understand it at first as i said because i assumed you’d be solving for y or something but it’s actually super helpful.

Here’s a photo I thought was helpful explaining vertex form visually:

Week 3 in Pc 11 – Roots and exponents test

This week in pre calc, we got ready for our first unit test, Roots and Exponents. We also learned more about exponents and how they work with radicals and those kinds of equations.

After how much we’ve been involved in exponents in Math 10, I was already pretty confident with them, but reviewing them and practicing some different equations was still helpful.

After this we started work on adding and subtracting radicals. This was a new way for us to work with radicals but it wasn’t very difficult.

Thus process includes taking a radical and converting it into mixed radical form. This means that theres a coefficient on the outside of the radical sign and you can add this coefficcient with other radicals as long as they have the same index and radicand.

Heres an example:

To clarify the example, You take a radical-like square root of twelve and you turn it into a mixed radical by factoring 12 for perfect squares. The perfect squares in 12 is only 2 so you take 2 out and put it as a coefficient leaving three as the radicand. repeat that process with 27 and since both the radicand and the index are the same you can add the coefficients leaving you with 5 square root 3.

Midterm Self Assessment and Goal-Setting

Atomic Theory:

For this unit, I think my biggest strength was using class time to practice different questions and complete assignments given. Since it was the first unit I was very motivated to do well on the test and wanted to make sure I properly understood the content that was being given. I spent many nights writing my own notes and completing any homework we had.

My weakness was that Instead of asking my peers or teachers for help when I had a question, I tried to teach myself. This seemed like it would work at the time but I didn’t end up getting as good of a mark in our unit test as I thought I would and this made me realize that asking for help when you don’t understand is way more effective than trying to teach yourself a subject that you’re fairly new too.

I am planning to retake this test and I think I have a much better understanding of how to properly study and understand the content learned to the best of my abilities. I’ve grown much more confident in my intelligence since the start of this year and I’m a lot more motivated to try my best and push myself in this class.

Bonding:

This unit was much more of a success for me than the previous one. I knew what I had done wrong when it came to studying and practicing and therefore I knew what I had to do to improve my mark and comprehend the content being taught. My motivation and study strategies were my strengths during this unit. I made sure to ask any questions I was really happy with my unit test mark as I’d worked hard to achieve it and I felt that it reflected my understanding well.

My struggle with this unit was my lab work. We only did one lab but I had to hand it in for corrections as me and my group didn’t do very well on it. We didn’t check over our work before handing in the worksheet and there were quite a few avoidable mistakes that could’ve been prevented if we’d checked over our work beforehand. I was happy with our mark after doing corrections but I think it was a good reminder that checking over work is important.

In the end, I was happy with how this unit went as it was somewhat a continuation from the first but my improvement on the unit test reflected my growth when it comes to learning.

The mole:

In this unit, I had a lot of weaknesses. I was not prepared for the transition from easier content to something more difficult and instead of working to understand I neglected my work and decided to avoid asking questions a lot like in the first unit. Math-based work is not something I normally enjoy or thrive in therefore I was not enthusiastic to start this unit. I didn’t use class time and I avoided doing homework at home. This was a big mistake and I can’t blame anyone for my poor unit test mark other than myself. I know that for units like this asking questions is important and checking over my work/completing extra practice is extremely important.

I think my strength in this unit was my collaboration with others. During labs and whiteboard work, I always tried to help others with the content I believed I understood and I made sure to help as much as I could even with my level of understanding.

I really want to improve my mark and I know I will work much harder in this upcoming unit because it was very upsetting to see the marks I’d worked for be brought down because of the negligence I showed my work. I’ll be sure to practice mole and gain a deeper understanding of the units content as it’s necessary for this upcoming unit and I believe I can improve my mark.

3D Arts Sculpting : Level 1

Week #, Date. Title (projects worked on)

  1. Brief Overview of what you did this week, including photo documentation of process.
  2. Your biggest struggle of the week.
  3. Your biggest success of the week.
  4. Goal for next week.

Week 1, September 10, 2024

This week of Sculpting 11 I learned many new things. I’ve never done any sort of art class before so I didn’t know what to expect but so far I’ve enjoyed it. Last week we learned a lot about different sculptures and how their patterns and lines can show and convey different emotions, we also touched on how different colours and shades can add more depth to your art. More recently we talked about how art can be used to show emotions that the artist can’t express with words alone. Art can be many things and I thought it was very interesting to learn this as I don’t typically use art to express emotions but I can see how it could be therapeutic. My biggest struggle this week was thinking about art as a way of expressing emotions. I quite enjoy drawing and painting but I’ve personally never used it as an emotional outlet. I think as this class goes on I’ll become better at that but I don’t have much practice with it currently. I think my biggest success of this week was collaborating with my peers and coming up with different ideas that added to our class discussions. I don’t love speaking out loud, this is why I think my goal next week will be to share my ideas more with the class and try to become more comfortable with it.

Week two, Elements and principles Art skill builder

Consideration and Research

This project is a great way for me to show how art and literature can help express emotions and be an outlet for creativity. Literature has always been very important to me and that is why it’s a part of my themes, specifically how it can be used as an escape from the stresses of everyday life. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed that art is a great outlet as well and something I’d really like to improve on because I have so much appreciation for artists and their ability to portray a message without saying anything.

I’d like to explore the themes of identity, isolation and memory and I believe that these are quite heavy emotions that can be vented through art or literature. These emotions have been a part of my artistic journey and through art, I’ve gained a better understanding of who I am and how to deal with the more complex emotions that I feel. This is why I’ve decided to use a book and different art utensils to create an image that represents using art as an outlet.

here’s my sketch

here’s a link that goes more into depth about using art as a creative outlet

Art as the Escape: How Creativity Can Help Manage Anxiety and Depression | by Annosha Mubasher | Medium

Week 2, September 30th, 2024

These past few weeks I feel I’ve learned a lot and gained more knowledge about the creative thought process artists put into their work. We started our Found Object projects and I had mentioned earlier that I really appreciated that art could be used as an outlet for stress so I tried to really utilize this idea in my project while including themes that could be tied into this idea. This is something I felt I succeeded in and I was very proud of my idea and the time that I put into it, making sure that it was meaningful to me.

This week, I struggled with making my art into something more than an idea. For my project I wanted it to include different textures and colours and I wasn’t sure how to do this at first which led me to have a rough start to the project but with some help, I was able to figure it out and I’m very happy with how my projects turning out so far.

next week I’d really like to make it a goal to try and collaborate with my peers more and really utilize the different perspectives and opinions of those around me. I find that others’ advice can be really helpful when making a project like this and even this week my friend was able to help me with my project and I think it’s important I keep this in mind and continue to ask for help when I need it and considers others constructive criticisms.

Week 3, October 7th, 2024

This past week I mainly worked on my found art project. My goal last week was to consider others’ opinions more and interact with my peers to try and get a better understanding others’ artistic perspectives. I found that I struggled with this. I get so caught up in my own art project that when I run into issues I tend to just solve it myself instead of asking for help. I think this will be my goal again for next week as I think some outside perspective could really help my found art project and add more depth to it.

My biggest success this week was my ability to convey the themes in my project. Last week I wasn’t sure what symbolism I should be using and if my art project was going to turn out how I envisioned it. Still, it’s starting to develop into a significant project to me and I think it’s fascinating how even though we all are doing the same project everyone has been able to create a theme and convey this through their art.

Week 4, October 15th, 2024

Last week I finished my found art project and this week we are starting a new project that involves making a Sgrafitto Tile. After finding my group for this project I found some inspo pictures to help visualize any ideas.

I really liked these pictures because they depict different examples of Sgrafitto but each piece of art is connected in some way to each other. In the first picture, it’s by the tree, in the second by the sea creatures and in the third by the colours and different aspects of nature. This is very helpful because it can give me and my group better ideas for our brainstorming process.

My group decided to make four tiles that represent the four seasons. in the center of each tile they’ll be part of a tree and when put together this tree matches up to connect all four tiles. Each tile will also have one significant animal to that season; I think these elements will help tie our pieces together.  I chose to depict the season fall in my tile so here is our sketch of all four tiles and my own individual tile.

Week 5, October 23th, 2024

This week in sculpting I worked on my tile. It was really cool because it was my first time working with clay. I first made my tile and let it dry, after that I used white glaze on it so that I could carve my design later on. Today I started carving out my design. It was a little difficult at first because I let my tile get too dry but I was able to make it work and I actually like how it’s turning out so far. I’ve carved out my main points I just need to add some more details. This week my biggest success was my ability to work with a new material and like I said my tile was a little overly dry but I still made it work and I’m very happy with how it’s turning out so far. My biggest struggle was figuring out what kind of design’s I wanted to do and making a realistic sketch for the tile. I have a lot of detail I would like to add into my tile but I’m fairly new to carving therefore I don’t wanna over do things and mess up.

I think my goal for next week is to finish my tile and hopefully make a pumpkin. I would really like to work more with clay and create designs more intricate than a tile. I also would like to explore using coloured glazes because it’s a lot more restricting just having white or black as color options and i think it would be quite fun to make something i can add colour too.

Monster Mug

October 29th 2024

here are inspo pics for my monster mug

My mug, like my pumpkin, is inspired by venom. The tongue will go around the mug and turn into the handle, and the eyes will be bolded with clay.

Week 6, November 4th, 2024

This past week in Sculpting 11 I completed my Tile project and made a clay pumpkin. I find that as I use clay more and more it becomes a lot easier and I’ve developed more skills.

my completed tile:

carving this tile was my biggest struggle throughout the week. I had to restart and recarve because I had let my tile dry for too long and it became challenging to make fine details. After I remade my tile and recarved it I was very happy with my final product and think that it went very nicely with the other tiles in my group. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to complete my tile in time but I’m quite happy with how it turned out.

my biggest success this week was my pumpkin. I didn’t initially think I wanted to carve one but I ended up making one and I love how it turned out. Like my monster mug, it was inspired by Venom’s design and i really enjoyed carving it and adding all the details.

This week, my goal is to start my monster mug and make sure to wedge my clay properly. I struggled with this in the past, and it’s a vital part of making this mug food-safe.

Week 8, November 8th, 2024

This week, I started my monster mug in sculpting. I have really enjoyed this process, and I think my biggest strength of the week was overcoming my fears and making something I’ve never made before. I’ve felt a lot more creativity with this project as I have a lot more freedom with the criteria I find. It’s also gotten me more excited to make my inquiry project and I have a lot more ideas for it as well.

My struggles this week was designing my mug so that it wouldn’t be overly heavy and the handle could support it. I didn’t make a traditional mug handle, I decided to have my handle wrap around my mug making it look like a tongue wrapping around and up into the handle. I’m happy with how it turned out but making sure it was properly attached and secure onto the side was difficult.

My goal for next week is to finish my mug and begin my inquiry project. I’m still brainstorming ideas and am trying to figure out what new medium I would like to explore for this project.

Sunday, November 17th, 2024

this past week in sculpting I mainly worked on painting my mug and adding finer details. I finished the underglaze part and am very happy with how it turned out. My biggest struggle was probably smoothing it and making sure the paint was even.

It’s currently being bisque fired and after I will add glaze to it. My biggest success this week was completing my mug and having it turn out exactly how I envisioned it. The handle is also able to support my mug which I was very scared it would break off because of how heavy my mug is but it all worked out. My goal for next week is to begin my inquiry project and to take my time to plan out and sketch my ideas to ensure that I’m happy with my results.

Inquiry Project

My idea is to make a Wax Melter with a coconut base and the top will resemble a hibiscus flower.

Peer Feedback from Kira and Olivia

Concept drawings

Week 9, December 3rd, 2024

This week, I started my inquiry project in sculpting. I have my plans above, but my idea was to make a wax melter with a coconut-looking bottom and a hibiscus flower as the top for the wax to melt in. The coconut would be hollow, leaving room for a candle. I was excited to start this project, as it gave me much more creative freedom with my art.

This week I started sculpting the coconut part using the wheel. The wheel was a lot harder to use than I thought it would be. I tried for three days and each day I would work on the wheel for at least 30 mins but I wouldn’t end up happy with my results. The clay would become very hard to mould and it would end up uneven. I eventually was able to sculpt something I was happy with and now I’m working on carving in details and smoothing out the rest.

I definitely think using the wheel this week was my biggest struggle and I also think it contributed to my biggest success. I had a lot of struggles with it at first but now that I’ve made my coconut using it I’m very happy with how it turned out and think that my inquiry project is coming together nicely.

My goal for next week is to start constructing my flower and to begin assembling the actual melter.

Week 10, December 9th, 2024

This week, I worked a lot on my inquiry project in sculpting. I sanded everything to ensure it was smooth and that there were no cracks in the clay, and then I began to paint the base part of my wax melter, also known as the coconut part.

My biggest success this week was probably my perseverance while putting together my project. I encountered a lot of struggles and at one point the entire bottom of my Hibiscus flower cracked which was very upsetting because I was worried I was gonna have to restart the entire thing but in the end it was fine and I made it all work.

My biggest struggle this week similar to my success was stopping my clay from cracking and ensuring everything dried properly and smoothly. I had to re-attach and reconstruct a lot because of these struggles and it was concerning me because I thought I was going to have to restart my hibiscus flower but I made it work and I think my project is coming together very nicely.

My goal this week is to begin under-glazing my project and get it ready to be fired. The underglaze needs to have a lot of detail so I’m a little nervous to begin painting but i think it will turn out very nice and I’m excited to see the end product.

Inquiry Project: Product

Artist Statement :

I decided to work with clay and make a wax melter for my inquiry project. Essentially you put a candle in the base and wax in the top part which melts the wax. This isn’t very complicated to make so i decided to split it into two sections and make the base look like a coconut and the top like a hibiscus flower. I did this as Hibiscus flowers are my favourite kind, and I thought it would stay on the theme of making a coconut base. I’m very happy with how it turned out and I’m very proud of my work.

The new medium I explored with this project is using the pottery wheel. I’d never used one before but when making the base of my sculpture that’s what I used. The flower i sculpted out of clay like normal but it was still quite difficult as i had to sculpt each of the petals and attach it. The wheel was very difficult for me, and it took multiple tries before i had something I was happy with but i really like how it turned out especially after it’s been fired.

Some of my inspiration for this design was the flowers I saw when I went to Hawaii. I really enjoyed this trip, and I absolutely loved the nature there. The hibiscus flowers in particular were so pretty and that’s when they became my favorite kind.

When making this i started by sculpting the coconut base of the wheel and when that was done i made the flower and molded it to the base making sure it would all fit together nicely while drying. I did have to restart the flower as my original dried too fast and kept cracking, but my second try was much more successful, and I love how it turned out. I then glazed both of them and had them fired.

In the end I’m very happy with how it turned out and am excited to display it.

Some elements and principles shown in my project are Lin which is heavily shown in my flower. The flower petals are defined by the lines sculpted in to divide the petals making them much clearer. Shape as well is very utilised, there’s examples of cirles and more curved shaped but other parts like my coconut has much clearer and sharp like to resemble a “crack” in the coconut. The last element most present is texture, on the side of my coconut I tried to carve in lines to resemble the rough texture on the outside of a coconut shell while the inside is much smoother.

My main theme for this project Is sustainability and Eco-friendliness. A wax melter is already an example of recycling as it uses old wax from candles instead of having to buy new ones but I wanted to include a natural aspect into this project to really symbolize this.

Week 2 in Math Ten

for me this week I think think I really strengthened my skills in prime numbers.

at first I thought it wasn’t the most important things to learn, but the division tricks we learned have really helped me when doing some of the homework and I think that will continue to be a very useful skill that I will for sure use in the future.

I also think it was very good that I reviewed the rules for exponents because even though I thought I had those kinds of question down I still struggled a bit a first but now I think I’m a lot for prepared for that unit and any other questions that involve exponents.

ex:

72=2^3\cdot3^2

i had also needed to be refreshed on exponents that involve variables so that was very helpful.

in the end I think  this unit was very helpful review and I think I learned some very useful stuff that will help me with math ten this semester.
