This image by Steve Cutts titled comments represents the theme of how social media can affect your mental health due to how toxic it can be. By just glancing at this photo, you can see a man desperately holding on to a thin bar trying to get away from various monsters down below. When looking closely at the photo you can see more than that. At the top you can see the word “comments” bolded and an arrow pointing down at the swarm of monsters. The man appears to almost be faceless in a way since he is missing his eyes and I think that could represent how people use the anonymous aspect of social media to say whatever they what and be cruel to others while thinking that no one will ever find out who they are. This man could’ve been contributing to the toxicity on social media, and it seems that maybe his comments finally caught up to him, that could be represented by the fact that one monster has caught his leg. Once you begin making hateful comments online it becomes harder to stop, it is such an easy habit to fall into and when you begin to comment hurtful things you might not realize how badly you could be affecting someone. With this photo you could also flip the perspective, maybe this man was being attacked on social media for something and this photo represents how he was affected afterward. You can see the thin line he is holding onto is almost faded away which could represent his mental state and how he is barely able to hold on anymore after the hate that he has been receiving. I don’t think that others really mean to be so hurtful a lot of the time on social media but as I said it is so easy to fall into the pattern of being unkind and most of the time you won’t receive consequences. All of the monsters in this photo look the same as well, which once again represents the anonymous factor of social media. This image is a great satirical representation of social media.
