What I want to learn in this class

Cara MacGregor

February 1st, 2022

Ceramics and pottery have both been things I’ve been interested in learning about, but I’ve never had the chance. Learning how to make my own creations out of clay is something I wish to achieve in this class.

Vessel Project – Week 1

Last week I worked on the wheel and created the base for my first vessel. After letting it dry overnight wrapped in a moist paper towel and plastic bag, I was able to add extra details: the teeth, eyes, and foot. Over the weekend, my vessel (whom I named Walter) was put through the bisque fire.

I struggled with finding the right moisture level for me to be able to add the extra details on my vessel.

My plan for this week is to put an underglaze on Walter and for him to be completed by Friday.

Vessel Project – Week 2

Last week I started with sanding Walter and making sure that everything was smooth. After that, I was able to glaze some of his features, but not to the extent I wanted. With that, I left my vessel over the weekend with the intention of finishing the underglaze the following Monday.

Sanding wasn’t an easy process because of my vessel’s peculiar shape, but in the end, it came out how I wanted it to.

I completely forgot to take pictures for the beginning stages of my artwork, but these pictures document the end product and steps of my reconciliation painting.

Mask Process Week 1

May 23th, 2022

Last week I drew up my plan for my mask. I figured out the colouring I want to use and made a plan as to how I am going to create my mask.

My plans for this week are to create the initial starting point for my mask out of newspaper and paper mâché. After doing that and waiting for it to dry, I want to start painting as soon as possible, since that’s what I want to focus on for this design.

I did meet my goal for the week prior, since I focused entirely on making a design I love and relate to. I nearly spent the entire week working on this design, which is what I would say to be my only regret. I think I could’ve finished a bit sooner and gotten started on my final mask had I focused a bit more.

How this mask resonates with me and my “2 sides” are that one side of me can be very social and loud, while the other side of me is very antisocial and quiet. I gave this design heavy eye bags on both sides, since both sides of me are tired. For the social and loud side of me, there are loud and colourful colours. The other side is dull and mute colours, representing the loneliness and quietness of that part of me.

Mask Process Week 2

May  30th, 2022

Last week I was able to finished the newspaper and paper mâché part of my mask entirely. I had planned for my mask to be quite small, thus not making it take very long. I was also able to start painting and finish my base layer of paint.

I am happy with this as my final result and I’m proud of my work.

Inquiry Project

June 22, 2022

An Inquiry project is meant to be a project that has limited criteria, but follows the requirements of creating artwork that means something to you.

I chose my inquiry to focus on the concept of a higher power looking over our solar system. I am fascinated by what could be in our galaxy and if there is a higher power, so I wanted to express this wonder in my inquiry.
