What role does Trickster play in First Peoples literature?

What role does Trickster play in First Peoples literature?

April 30th, 2023 – English First Peoples 12

Throughout our Trickster unit we have discovered many different representations of the Trickster. Using these vastly unalike representations, we have been tasked in creating a concept map that answers the question of : What role does Trickster play in First Peoples literature? My concept map include the Trickster characters from Raven Steals the Light, a Native American tale, Coyote and Grizzly Bear Make the Seasons and Day and Night, from the legends of the Secwepemc, The One About Coyote Going West by Thomas King, The Long Dance by David A. Groulx, Poem Without End #3 by Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm, and Coyote and Salmon, from the legends of the Secwepemc as told by Lawrence Michel.

Red Dress Day – The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls of Canada

Red Dress Day, which falls on May 5th, is a day used to commemorate the Indigenous lives that have been taken or have been lost. For this day, we are asked to wear the colour red to honour these lives, along with raising awareness of this problem.

My responsibility for Red Dress Day was to create both a pin and a poster.

These contributions allowed me to share awareness with those around me. Wearing the pin encouraged people to begin a conversation regarding the subject, which in turn taught more people about Red Dress Day. My creations also served as reminders to wear red on May 5th, whereas many people may have forgotten without having viewed my pin or my poster. As for my own learning, researching Red Dress Day expanded my understanding of the day, along with how many people have been effected by the missing or murdered Ini

Worldview Reflection

What frames our Worldviews?

The ways in which we view the world vary from person to person, though they all stem from the same general factors. The environment around you is arguably the most impactful when it comes to world views, but personal values, beliefs, and societies also play a significant role. Personally, social influences greatly affect my world views, as I am someone who is easily guided by public opinion. Although I do have my own morals, I typically form my world views through what is shown to me on social media. Despite the common perception of the internet being overwhelmingly negative, there are several useful pieces of knowledge I have learned online. Posts about political, societal, and environmental issues have randomly shown up on my screen, thus forcing me to consume new information. Often, I form my views regarding these topics to match the opinions of those around me, or to match the opinion of whom provided me with said information. Unknowingly, I minimize my own beliefs in favour of fitting in with society.

As previously stated, environment is usually considered to have the largest influence on a person. In the photo essay, Where Children Sleep by James Mollison, it can be seen how different environments form significant differences in development. Children that grew up in wealthy homes are photographed smiling in clean, ironed clothing, while those who grew up in less fortunate situations are seen frowning with dirt and scars on their bodies, along with tears in their clothes. These differences solely reflect the physical individualities between each child, therefore not even taking culture, society, education, and beliefs into consideration. The Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being expresses that “We – the two-legged, four-legged, finned and feathered, plants and rocks – are all related”. This ideology connects perfectly with the fact that we are all separate, though the factors forming our views are all the same.

Reconciliation Mural Painting Tile2

Turtle River is an acrylic painting including many influences of what reconciliation means to me.

With that, I decided to research different symbols of significance within Indigenous culture. I found many examples, but what stood out to me was the turtle.

Within many Indigenous communities, the turtle is an important symbol of their culture, the most popular reason being the story of Turtle Island.

In some tribes and communities, the story of Turtle Island is the story of creation. It is believed by various Indigenous peoples that their land was formed on the back of a turtle, which shaped many of the current beliefs present in Indigenous culture.

My final artwork is of two turtles in a river. Turtles represent growth, identity, wisdom and respect, while flowing water represents fluidity and change, all of which connect to what Reconciliation means to me.

River of Reconciliation – Calls to Action

Creating a presentation on a selected one of the “Calls to Action” gave me the opportunity to learn more about how mistreated the Indigenous community is by the Canadian government. After watching and listening to other’s presentations on this topic, I have been able to truly see how many inhumain issues there are.

Though steps are being made every day to improve the livelihood of First Nations in Canada, the damage has already been done.

Many of the “Calls to Action” have been addressed and compromised by the government, but there are also many that have been disregarded. With that, I would love to see an improvement within the government on listening to individual stories and experiences of First Nations negatively affected by our past mistakes.

Vessel Project – Week 2

Last week I started with sanding Walter and making sure that everything was smooth. After that, I was able to glaze some of his features, but not to the extent I wanted. With that, I left my vessel over the weekend with the intention of finishing the underglaze the following Monday.

Sanding wasn’t an easy process because of my vessel’s peculiar shape, but in the end, it came out how I wanted it to.

Vessel Project – Week 1

Last week I worked on the wheel and created the base for my first vessel. After letting it dry overnight wrapped in a moist paper towel and plastic bag, I was able to add extra details: the teeth, eyes, and foot. Over the weekend, my vessel (whom I named Walter) was put through the bisque fire.

I struggled with finding the right moisture level for me to be able to add the extra details on my vessel.

My plan for this week is to put an underglaze on Walter and for him to be completed by Friday.
