Math 10 – Week 1

Last week in Ms. Burton’s Foundation of Math and Pre Calculus 10 Class, we were working with Prime numbers. We looked at what a prime number (Anyone number that can only multiplyed by the number it is and 1.) Divison Tables is a strategy used to solve the prime factors of a large number.

In my personal experience I have also found Number Trees confusing. With the Divison Table it is simple division and after you complete the question all your prime factors are there in order from least to greatest. It is way easier to show your work compared to a number tree. On a division table it is basically just using long division

 

Bard in the Classroom Reflection

(A tragic scene as Hero was stabbed in “Much Ado about Nothing”.)

Last week in English 10, Luc and Anton from”Bard on the Beach,” came to our classroom inform us a little bit more about Shakespeare and his work. A lot of the activities were based around the play “Much Ado About Nothing,” It was an interactive three days which was fun. From the high energy of Luc, To the group exercises which consisted of creating tableau’s based on “Much Ado About Nothing”. Even the warm up was a fun, high energy and in general great way to start a morning with “Bard on the Beach,” One of the activities was a Shakespearean insult and compliment stand off. So I went up to someone and said a sentence were was a insult that Shakespeare used in one of his plays. The funny part was we then had to say the insult as a compliment which half sounded the same. Luc and Anton also taught me that there were four different play types like Comedy which often had love as a common theme, Romance which sounded like a love story, but Luc and Anton taught it was actually a play involving mystery and acts of supernatural, there were also tragedies which were based around betrayal and violence, and the last one was History which was about social class and true political events. “Much Ado about Nothing,” was a comedy as it had Benedick and Beatrice and Claudio and Hero having romantic relationships. The only part that could have used improvement was the repetive activities like the tableau. All though my most liked activity was the tableau I would of loved more activities. Luc and Anton taught me about the influence and impact that Shakespeare had on the English language and his though process about creating the plays. Though I get the premise of “Much Ado about Nothing,” I get confused about the character relations.

Non-Fiction Advertising Analysis

 The Mercurial Vapor VII or 8’s were released by Nike in 2012 as stated in the following article http://www.soccercleats101.com/2012/03/19/nike-mercurial-vapor-8-released-explosive-speed/ and signed a sponsorship with Neymar da Silva Santos Junior, months before.

Nike released the ad in order to draw excitement about their new football or soccer boots the Nike Mercurial Vapor 8’s. Nike released the football or soccer boots for players that want to enhance their football playing skills.

There was no intended age group for this product as they are opened to all soccer players. This ad attracts attention to those who follow FC Barcelona, Brazil’s International Soccer Team, or Neymar da Silva Santos Junior.

This ad is demonstrating that if you buy this product you will in fact have “explosive speed,” the fire behind Neymar is implying that will in fact have higher speed that everyone who does not have the football cleat. In addition to the brightly coloured boots, the flashy stadium lights is visual appealing to any soccer fan. The text that is used is also visually appealing as you can see the phrase that is displayed. Nike put the trademark logo on the left-bottom corner as it is a trusted sports brand.

Ethos is used as the appeal type, because of the professional football player Neymar da Silva Santos Junior. Neymar is advertising the boots and is known as a good football player. This would strike as appealing to a lot of young soccer player as previously stated.

Persuasive techniques that are used in the ad are techniques that make you believe that your ahead of game or a superior footballer. Avant Garde is used to make the buyer believe that you will be better and ahead of the average footballer by buying the boot. Bandwagon could applied as a persuasive technique, because the football club FC Barcelona doing well and people knowing that Neymar is in that club could get a buyer to purchase the boot. The ad could be using a of Snob appeal because it is suggesting that you will become an elite player while using the boot.

 

Holocaust Memoir

Story: All these people are so proud of me. I hate it, why am I getting praised for being a murderer? Father tells me how I am improving the Schneider family name. Telling my children how brave I am. My children respect me for reasons so sinister. How am I protecting anyone? All the Germans convinced the Jewish are evil. Well their not! My life is backwards, as it is tortures me to torture others who do not deserve it. The worst thing about the whole situation is I am good at my job. The Jewish listen to me as I show more respect than the rest of the guards. I have to do my job, I wish there was another way about achieving peace between the German’s and the Jewish. The discrimination is foul, I hate it when fellow Nazi’s call the Jewish “Jews,” I hate the fact I am Nazi. It should be the Jewish in the position of the Nazi’s. It is really a kill or be killed situation out here. I despise every fact about being a S.S Commander including the job title. Just getting up knowing that I am responsible for the enormous fence around them makes me feel nauseous. At least I am the Commander, so I can treat the Jewish with more respect than most without getting in trouble. When the retired commander Klaus Weber was working, he abused the Jewish so much to the point where I thought about finishing that bastard off myself. Having to impress that guy was infuriating. I want to hide as the Nazi’s want my son to part of the Nazi Youth. Imagining  Nickolaus, my intelligent boy shooting guns is enough to send me into an early grave. The struggles I am going through are horrible and the treatment to the Jewish is to. Why did the Holocaust exist? It will anger me until the day I die.

100 word explanation: In the story above was explaining the struggles that a S.S Commander (Person in charge of a concentration camp) went through during WWII. The struggles of the roles of a S.S Commander made Schneider (S.S Commander) very disgusted and effected his mental health. To empathize with his man, who truly had a good heart though his actions did not show it, was easier to write in a first person POV. It explains the emotions of Schneider in a really unique way. My choice was to write the story in the perspective of a regretful guard. I am sure many camp guards were regretful and times during the holocaust and I really wanted to bring that to light in the story.

We Remember- Liberation Poem

Explanation: I wrote this poem to present my views on the journal entry written by Charles V. Ferree from his feelings about the liberation of the Jewish as an American soldier. I based the poem about the main points using nouns, verbs and adjectives. The poem is dedicated to those men and women who lost their lives during WWII.

Liberation Poem:

Lifeless bodies are scattered,
As we land on the makeshift landing strip.
As I wonder whatever went wrong,
This has the nauseating feeling.
It does not stop whether it’s Buchenwald, Munich or Dachua,
The Jews are now rebelling.
Burning their uniforms with the awful stench floating in the air,
Beating the guards senseless,
It’s what they have been taught.
The starvation, the torture, and the suffering,
Revenge is what motives them.
Is this really liberation?
Demands from Eisenhower called,
Is anyone listening?
Germans have started something that can never be finished.

“The Cage”- WWII Timeline

July 25, 1938 – Jewish doctors prohibited by law from practising medicine.

History: Germans placed a law upon the Jewish by banning students from getting an education in the medical field. It was created to restrict the “Jewish activity” in the medical field and legal professions. There were laws placed later on that meant the Jewish doctors were not being reimbursed for their health insurance money. Jewish doctors were not allowed to treat any patients that were not Jewish. It also meant the Jewish lawyers and notaries were stripped of the license and it disabled them to practice law. Any Jewish citizens were not able to receive an education in law.

Application: While reading the section in the novel “The Cage,” is known that the doctors have restrictions put on them when you see, Moishe takes Riva across the ghetto to see the doctor about her gallbladder stones. The doctors are not able to give out any medicine, so Riva was not giving any medication. Diseases are spread quickly because of the laws that disallowed doctors from giving any treatment. The doctor that was treating Riva got very emotional because he was not able to treat Riva. Many conflicts arose when the Nazi’s were in power though in this particular conflict. External conflict is shown when the laws were placed. Due to the amount of people that were affected by the diseases, the appropriate conflict is Man vs. Society, from the leader who had set the law put the whole population of Lodz ghetto in danger.

May 10, 1933 – Public burning of books written by Jews, political dissidents, other not approved by the state

History:  Nazi’s book burnings were lead by the German Student Union. The books were burned because they were views from the Jewish opposed to Nazism. It was considered propaganda of the German Student Nation. Over 25,000 books were torched and set on fire because of the “un-German” topics. Another cause to the German book burnings was that the Nazi’s did not want to make the Jewish remember happier times than before; it was considered “building censorship.”

Application: While the Minska’s transfer their house to the cellar, they agree that they should volunteer to have their house as the new hidden library. The Jewish have been disallowed of receiving an education, so they decided to keep books and have study groups behind the German’s back. If the books are found, they would be burned, and the Jewish would be punished. It was located in the corner of the room, so if the Nazi’s could have demanded a search, it would appear to be a closet. Knowing that the Nazi’s would have punished the Jewish, primarily the Minska’s, it would be considered a person vs. Person conflict. Riva stood up for the Jewish in an honourable way. The opposing side is the Nazi’s, who would have confiscated the books.

 

April 30, 1940 – The Lodz ghetto in occupied Poland is sealed off from the outside world with 230,000 people locked inside.

History: Around Jewish ghettos, there was a large barbed- wire fence. It was put there prevent the Jewish from escaping. German patrol officers were surrounding the perimeter, so there were no attempts to climb over and leave the ghetto. With a large number of people in the ghetto getting infections spread throughout the ghetto quickly.  Diseases like tuberculosis were contracted. It was easy to locate and to keep track of the Jewish with the fence surrounding. More than 1,000 ghettos with surrounding gates were formed.

Application:  At the beginning of the novel “The Cage,” in the ghetto, there is mention of a giant fence around the ghetto. Riva’s family is significantly affected by the fence because the diseases are spreading so fast. Riva’s brother Laibele developed tuberculosis and later died because the fence had enclosed them. Because of the ghetto that was similar to a prison, there were so many people in the Jewish ghetto with zero freedom than in the before. Fences play a huge role to people’s sanity. The emotional setting is set in place due to the ghetto that felt like a prison. People were so defeated and depressed because to the fence. The atmosphere was turned so dark so suddenly, and people were so fearful, Riva was so defeated that anyone that came back from her former life made Riva was so hopeful. The physical setting is a small little town that was turned into a prison

November 23, 1939 – Yellow stars required to be worn by Polish Jews over the age of ten.

History: Yellow stars worn by the Jewish was a star with six- points. The Star of David is represented by the Jewish by remaining on their left arm. Though as means of identification, the Jewish wore a blue star to represent their culture. It was often used against the Jewish as discrimination. The Nazi’s found this to be extremely helpful as it was now very easy to see who was a Jew.  The word “Jude” was inscribed on the star to identify.

Application: The Star of David is presented in the novel “The Cage,” when Riva’s cousin Saba was embarrassed to wear the star. The Jewish wanted to be proud of their religion, though they are fearful of what was going to happen to them. The Jewish then started to feel envious of the Nazi’s, because the Jewish felt like the Nazi’s was using their religious symbol as a way of discrimination. This event is a plot point towards the rising action in “The Cage” because the Nazi’s began to mistreat the Jewish further and abused the Jewish which was the reason of the abuse towards the Jewish. It began as a trait to be mocked for and then was turned into a reason to essentially torture the Jewish, because of their religious beliefs.

January 25, 1940 – Nazi’s choose the town of Osweichem (Auschwitz) in Poland near Krakow as the site of a new concentration camp.

History:  Auschwitz is the largest concentration camps. It has three main areas. All the camps centred on the prisoners to do forced labour. One of them was a focal point for killing the Jewish. The three camps were called Auschwitz I (Stammlager), Auschwitz II (Birkenau), and Auschwitz III (Monowitz). Camp authorities murdered around 1.1 million people.  The camp operated between 1940- 1945. Either people were killed for being Jewish or Gypsy, some for even being homosexual. Most people did not even die from being murdered but from starvation, exhaustion, and infections.

Application: Riva and her friends were sent to a concentration camp known as “Auschwitz.” As soon as they were transferred there, they are forced to remove their clothes and have their heads shaved. Riva tells her numbing experiences, like when she saw a little boy who saw his mother die. Their identities were taken from them, including their names and religions. Every Auschwitz member was forced to remember a number as their new identities. Family members were often split up, while Riva was determined to find her mother. Riva was convinced she saw her mother. It was very hard to tell since everyone looked the same. While Riva was calling out to a lady who she thought was her mother, a woman stopped her and mentioned that she was probably moved to a different camp or dead. This point could be considered the climax as Riva had lost hope and trapped in a concentration camp.

October 25, 1939- Forced labour decree issued for Polish Jews between ages 14 to 60.

History:  Nazi’s made the Jewish go through inhuman treatments. All throughout Poland there was forced labour being applied to all the Jewish. In Lodz ghetto, there were 96 factories full of forced labourers from a very young age. Once a Jewish person became unproductive a Nazi would execute the Jewish worker. It became easy to see economic gain from the amount of labour that was happening. The Jewish would work so hard they would work to death.

Application: Forced labour was issued to the whole Minska family in “The Cage,” Riva and her mother both worked ridiculous hours a day to produce clothes for the Nazi’s. The Minska’s received one loaf of bread for one week when they completed their labour. Laibele got extremely sick while doing his work and he never worked again, due to the working conditions. Part of the reason why Nazi’s captured the Jewish was that the Nazi’s wanted them to complete labour. Groups of Nazi’s in “The Cage,” known as the Waffen-SS, They were static characters as the Waffen-SS was constant on mistreating the Jews. The Waffen-SS would often degrade the Jewish, because of their religion. Their views never changed and always remain hostile.

After reading and analyzing the struggles from the first two chapters from “The Cage,” by Ruth Minsky Sender. Recognizing the difficulties in the ghetto was apparent because many people were hopeless, terrified and worked to death with the labor that was forced. Within the ghetto, many diseases were passed around like tuberculous. Once someone had received the conditions, there was nothing that they could do about it. Due to the malnutrition and the lack of resources the doctors were unable to help in any form. The nazis would often kill the sick, or the sick would die on their own due to natural causes. It was not helpful that the parents would often get separated from their children. Young adults and teens would often have to take on the mother role for their family. Having to mature so quickly was expected. Young adults would hope to go back to school to receive an education. When in fact, they set up study groups to educate each other. The Jewish were very unfortunate because they would only get a loaf of bread a week and a bowl of soup to cure their hunger. The quality of life was horrendous as people spend years in a city that they could never leave due to the large fence that covered the cities.
