Oral Storytelling

Learning about oral storytelling has helped me to understand the deeper importance of stories shared between family and friends. For example, I often see my parents discuss happenings at each other’s work and I realize now that this could be a form of oral storytelling, in the sense that they communicate how they deal with problems at work. My parents also often tell me oral stories where they communicate to me how they dealt with similar situations to mine in the past, such as my father telling me about the part of his life when he was figuring out his post-secondary options or his first job. I also now think they are an important part of seeking and giving help because of this, both in terms of explaining a problem and helping to find ways to resolve it.
