A political spectrum, is a x and y axis, that gives you an idea of a political party’s ideologies, where the x axis represents the left as “change” with government intervention, supplied services.  the right wing represents maintaining, where there is free market, fewer services, and lower taxes. For the y axis, it represents the social scale, with the top being authoritarian where it is a lot of control of the government, and on the bottom where liberalism is, it represents personal freedom and liberty. The difference between right and left on the x axis, is that it mainly focuses on how the government is giving the citizens more financial and economic liberty as well as the contribution of government services, as the left of the spectrum represents supplied services and government intervention, while the right represents free market and lower taxes but fewer services supplied by the government. As for the differing variables when comparing the top and bottom of the y axis, it is simply the amount of how much freedom and liberty the government gives their citizens so that is all the difference in that field. In the novel, we can see that the INSOC government takes action in constantly having their citizens monitored and watched as well as them having a big issue with people disagreeing with the political parties “ideologies”, as we can see when Winston talks about the thought police and how people get vaporized. In regard to where I believe Big Brother and the INSOC government lays upon the political spectrum, I would say it would be on the authoritarian side, because we see that the government is usually very controlling over its citizens, and for the x axis, I would place it closer to the left wing, because from how we know how controlling the government is just over the freedom of its citizens, I would say that INGSOC wouldn’t be representing lower taxes and a free financial market.

What is propaganda? Propaganda is when someone, or something is using different strategies to try and get you to believe, or do something. One may think of propaganda as something the one would use to “plant a seed in an individuals mind”. Throughout the novel 1984, we can already tell that in the the first few pages of the book this dystopia that our protagonist Winston lives in, is very controlled and under surveillance, as we are introduced to one of the largest forms of propaganda in the novel, big brother. Big Brother is seen throughout the novel as a authorative figure, and he is in the highest power of the ingsoc society. Big brother’s face is put on posters throughout all of Oceania, reading “Big Brother is watching you” to remind everyone that they are under surveillance, and if someone is always watching you, it is a seed being planted in your mind as well, that most people have gotten used to in this society. Other examples include the 2 minutes hate, where the working class of proles are put in front of a telescreen, and they are shown propaganda and proceed to get infuriated towards what is being presented to them. To get these propaganda strategies out to the public, the ingsoc uses sneaky techniques of propaganda to reach the wanted audience. The techniques include Deification, where it is made that something is seen as holy, or above all, Fear which is used especially when everywhere is a reminder that a man is watching you, and Misuse of statistics, which the government bends to their will as we can see many times during the story.

Winston smith is a clumsy, scrawny middle aged man, who has his own beliefs, but is obviously taken under the influence by the society he lives in. he is a wise man, but has trouble following through on his ideas. Winston is also a very weary man, and he seems to be very careful. He is also very observant, and has an opinion and an idea on what is going on around him, but he is also under a mental influence of the government and big brother. He has glasses, and is skinny with frail arms, and he wears a blue coverall. He is a very paranoid person, who looks and feels tired. He is a smoker, and his diet consists of bread and gin. He lives in a grimy and low level living apartment called the victory mansions.

In our book  “1984” our protagonist Winston is thought out to be a frail weak and weary man, as described when he has difficulty going to his apartment,  ” The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle went slowly, resting several times on the way.” (Orwell 3).

For this weeks math post, I am going to explain how to understand and use function notation.

Function notation, uses a formula that looks somewhat like this

f(x)=…

Our first number is what our function is, and our x, is our input

Our first letter (f) basically just tells us what function it is, and it helps us differ each function notation from one another. The x’s job is to basically just be our input, and in most formulas, x is a number but we where using the “skeleton” form of this equation.

Our next example is going to be this

f(5)=3x+6

how we would solve this, is by inputting our x (5) into our equation so it will look something like this.

f(5)=3(5)+6

after this is done, all we have to do is multiply, and add our variables together. So our answer will be:

f(5)= 21

Other questions may give you something that looks like this

It may give you the layout (ex)

f(x)=3(x)+6

and then it will give you

f(x)=21

your job is now to find what x is.

how one may do this is by subtracting 6, then dividing by 3, which will give us the correct answer of f(x)=5.

I chose to do my blog post on this topic because I feel as though I understood it fairly well and that I could demonstrate it in a learning fashion as well.

Why did George Orwell write 1984?

I believe that George Orwell wrote 1984, because he wanted to see if he could change what he thought needed to be changed in the world at the time,  using his particular skillset. As the book was made right after world war two, Orwell had just witnessed terrible violence and had been noticing the downsides and how bad the rulers of the nations he had witnessed where, and he was thinking of how he could make a change and get his opinion out into the public in a way where he could also be using his particular skillset and gift of literature.  So after Orwell got this idea, he decided to go make the the novel nineteen-eighty four, where in the book, it deals with a  world where all of Orwell’s fears for what the world could be where taken into a story where many different things happen, such as different rulers, and different social issues taken to a more viscous and lifelike form. I believe that Orwell made the book to be a warning of what he believed would happen to the world if what he saw that was wrong, grew into a larger issue.

For this weeks math blog post I will be explaining how to use the vertical line test to find out if a x and y axis pattern is a function or a relation.

Our first step will be to have a x and y axis with a pattern on it in this case it will be continuous, because the vertical line test only works on a x and y axis

This is one of the simplest tests to find out if it is a function or not.

the next step is just to see if you can draw a vertical line, that intercepts our continuous pattern in more than 2 places.

as you can see where I drew the line, this means that it is NOT a function. when our vertical line intercepts in 2 places. this means it is a relation. If it where to be a continuous pattern that passed our vertical line test, it would have been a function.

as for discrete patterns, it is the same thing as continuous, if we can draw a line and it goes through two dots, then it is not a function, BUT NOTE: if the discrete patterns dots differentiate from each other because they are filled in or not filled in, it will change if it is a function or not. for example if a filled in dot was above a non filled dot, it would still not pass the vertical line test, but since one is colored in and one is not the vertical line test does not matter.

For this weeks blog post I decided to make it on how to properly format a polynomial expression.

What is a polynomial expression? A polynomial expression is just an expression like any other, but it consists of mainly variables, exponents, constants and coefficients. One thing to note in finding and solving polynomial expressions is that we are not trying to find a definite answer, but we are mainly adding up our like terms.

our first example will be 6x²+2x+9-x+3x²

The first step in how to solve and properly format this polynomial equation is to add our common terms. In polynomials, we are only allowed to add similar terms together, so we are not allowed to add 6x² and 9 together because one has a variable and an exponent, and the other is a constant that doesn’t share anything with the other, so like I said we don’t do anything with the equation.

So adding together our terms will give us

9x²+9+x.

How did I get this answer? I’ll explain. I took the 6x² and added the 3x² to it, giving me 9x² because we only add the coefficients together. after that we took the 2x and the -x together. Since -x is equivalent to -1x, it gave us 1x but we can just remove the 1 away, because if there is only one x, it is known that there is an invisible 1 in front of it. After that, the 9 had no like terms so we just left it as it is.

Wait… there is still something wrong with the equation right now, and it has to do with the format of it.

9x²+9+x

This is formatted incorrectly for one reason. If we take a look at where each term is placed in the equation, one may say it is correct, which it technically is, the terms should be going from largest in value to least. So although the equation is correct, if we want to go a step further and properly format, we would put x in front of 9.

making our correct and properly formatted equation:

9x²+x+9.

The next example will be:

7x²+8x+3-2x²+x-2

Remember our first step is to add our like terms. So first it will be 5x² then 9x and then 1

So our final equation properly formatted will be:

5x²+9x+1

Why I chose this concept for my blog post is because I understood it well and I also believe that it is the most important basic information needed to succeed in polynomials.
