I’m in awe of what Katy Hutchinson in “Walking After Midnight” has done. She was able to become strong enough to forgive and use a tragic experience to her own advantage in order to make a difference. While I admire her for what she has I done, I don’t believe I would ever be able to do what she did. I can’t see myself confronting the killer of my husband and being able to stay level – headed. Instead, all the rage, hatred, and sadness that I have tried to escape from will come flooding back. I’m not one to hold a grudge for very long, but that is not the same thing as forgetting what has happened, forgiving those who have wronged me, and letting them back into my life. I also don’t mean that once someone has wronged me they can no longer be in my life. It all depends on the situation. I chose the quote “Forgiveness is my gift to you, moving on is a gift to myself,” because it accurately tells the difference between the forgiving and moving on. To move on is to accept what has happened and continue on in one’s own life. To forgive is to accept as well as be able to understand the perspective of the person who has wronged you and to some degree, be alright with what they have done. Thus helping both parties to move on and heal. Having wronged someone before, I know how much of a difference it makes to know you have been forgiven, whether it be for a small error or fatal mistake. “Walking After Midnight” is a very good example of this. Together Katy and Ryan Aldrige grew from the tragic incident and took away something positive. Katy not only saved herself from letting the incident control her, she also helped Ryan save himself and become a part of something greater. In a world full of hatred, rage, and tragedy, we need restorative justice to help create positivity to balance it out.
Caitlin – well done! I really like how you addressed Ryan and how he became part of ‘something greater’
