Poetry Response

I think that Countee Cullen’s use of allusions in Yet do I Marvel  is better than Langstan Hughes’ use in The Negro speaks of rivers because of its complexity. Hughes’ work was catered towards the average person. His vocabulary is much simpler compared to other poets such as Langstan Hughes.   In Yet do I Marvel, each allusion requires more research.  A strong understanding of each allusions is what allows the audience to comprehend the message or purpose of the poem. On the other hand, the meaning and purpose behind The Negro speaks of rivers is much easier to understand. The allusions Cullen uses are simpler. They allude to more general events or topics that require little studying. Meanwhile, Hughes alludes to specific stories whose details contribute greatly to poem.  Yet do I marvel requires the audience to think more in depth thus making his allusions more in depth.
