Today in Math 10, my partner Jaya and I worked on building a football out of spaghetti and marshmallows.
- At first we wondered if we could construct it using triangles but then remembered that a football has hexagonal faces. Therefore we started imaging what a football would like if it was deconstructed into a net.
- Originally we had used one full length piece of spaghetti for each side of the hexagon. However this made the model extremely unstable and quite large. We decided to use a quarter of the original length instead. When we attempted to fold up our net, we realized that our model would have to contain shapes other than hexagons as well.
- This activity is requires us to use what we know about geometry in order to complete it. We needed to visualize what the net of a 3D object (the football) would look like.
