Where the sidewalk ends

The poem I chose is called where the sidewalk ends and its about a sidewalk where there are two ends, one of them is all polluted and has smoke everywhere, and the other end has birds, grass, and a bright red sun. There are people on the polluted side who are trying to get to the other side and children are drawing arrows out of chalk pointing towards the other side. The further you walk, your surroundings become more alive.

What is the message of this poem?

The message of this poem is that some parts of this world can be bad, and other parts can be good. By bad I mean polluted and by good I mean clean.

“Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black

and the dark street winds and bends.”

-Shel Silverstein

Why this quote? It tells us that the side these people are on is the polluted side, and they want to leave it. This ties into some parts of the world being bad and some being good. There is probably lots of fire and stuff cause the smoke is black. Polluted air is bad to inhale and can damage your lungs, mostly the smoke though. They want to leave this side because of that.

“Yes we’ll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,

and we’ll go where the chalk-white arrows go,

for the children, they mark, and the children, they know,

the place where the sidewalk ends.”

-Shel Silverstein

What does this quote mean? It’s saying that the arrows are pointing towards the other side, and the children know where it is and are guiding people by drawing arrows on the sidewalk. The walk is a long walk as they say the walk is measured and slow.

“There is a place where the sidewalk ends

and before the street begins,

and there the grass grows soft and white,

and there the sun burns crimson bright,

and there the moon-bird rests from his flight

to cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black

and the dark street winds and bends.

Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow

we shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow

and watch where the chalk-white arrows go

to the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we’ll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,

and we’ll go where the chalk-white arrows go,

for the children, they mark, and the children, they know,

the place where the sidewalk ends.”

-Shel Silverstein

Your job is to pick one theme and put that word in the centre circle. In the surrounding circles, you will need to find examples or quotes that prove that the theme that you selected is evident in the novel.

Possible Themes to consider.

Choices: What are the consequences of our choices?

Survival: What lengths do people take to survive?

Environment: How does the environment we are in shape our actions?

Acceptance: Why is it hard for people to accept others?

Trust: Why is it hard for people to trust others?

Indigenous Exploration “Residential Schools”

My experience creating this assignment was fun and I liked this project and it was rather simple to do.  My groups path in researching the topic went well but the only tough thing was finding information on the specific school we chose because there was barely any information on it. Obstacles and items I learnt in the recording is that it’s not so easy to get a good audio recording,  What I use to communicate my learning is by making mistakes, after multiple attempts and fails later we got a good voice recording one that we agreed on and was good enough.

Stop motion, on the sidewalk bleeding

The theme is a gang fight against the Guardians and Royals, a 16 year old boy named Andy is a member of the royals and gets stabbed by one of the guardians, the message is don’t get involved in a gang because things like this can happen.

The key characters of the story are Andy  who is the main protagonist in the story but he gets stabbed by a gang member of the Guardians. Another key character is Laura who is Andy’s girlfriend and she tries to save him from dying but is too late. The side characters are the cop and the couple, the couples characters are only side characters because they don’t have that much time in the story but they have a really important role for what they said, the cop is also a side character because he only shows up at the end of the story to help Andy but is too late.

The antagonist of the story is the environment and the person who stabbed Andy, the environment is an antagonist because of the elements and conditions that it was in. It was cold and raining outisde, in a dark alley. The person who stabbed Andy is the main antagonist because they caused Andy to be lying on the ground bleeding.

The irony of the story is that Andy thought he looked super cool in his jacket but now he just got rid of it because he didn’t want anyone to find out he was a royal.

The mood of the story is gloomy as its setting is a dark stormy night in a city alley way

A symbol in the story is Andys jacket as it has the Royal logo on it which shows that he is apart of a gang

The conflict of the story is that nobody wanted to help Andy, even though he was in a gang he was only 16 years old

I contributed to this project by doing the movements of the characters and bringing the lego characters, our project is on the sidewalk bleeding
