Soap Stone Cat – Complete

Today I worked on the Ivory bar soap to get used to how it works and I carved one of my cats Zorro out of it.

The most challenging part was drawing on the paper before I started. I’m not a 2D artist, I’m not the best at drawing.

The most rewarding part was when I could see Zorro start to form on the piece of soap.

I have slightly modified the project during the research phase, the cat is no longer Zorro. The cat is now Mrs. Chippy, he was a ship’s cat on the Endurance during 1914-1915, unfortunately for Mrs. Chippy, his life was cut short when the Endurance got stuck in ice while at sea and the captain ordered the least likely to survive must be shot. Mrs. Chippy was among the animals that were shot, and his owner never forgave the captain.

This is how far I have gotten with the actual soapstone.

Okay, so I have now finished the Soapstone Cat. I forgot to post and unfortunately, I forgot to acquire photos so there has been no post. I will definitely be getting photos for later projects. Anyways here is the finished cat.

This piece connects to my artist philosophy in that it isn’t perfect but I think it is pretty close. The media used was soapstone, which is also an insight into my creative decisions as many things I make aren’t exactly perfect. The elements I used for this are line and shape, if you look closely enough on the cat you will see lines carved into the cat. The theme I chose was darker, as the soapstone piece I chose was darker. The vision I had for this was to make it almost real but not quite and I think I did it pretty well.
