New Media Intro

What is new media? New media is online, on demand and interactive unlike traditional media like the television. Although new media is helpful, there is fragmented consumption. Fragmented consumption is when society will go from device to device, like phone to the computer, and then on a phone there are many different apps because every app has a different purpose. A phone isn’t always useful in some situations. There are things a computer can only do, or it’s easier to do these things on computer rather than a phone. Consuming media isn’t always good for someone. It was even shown, “In 2017the average American spent more than 12 hours a day with various media” (Donovan). There are things to help fix this habit though. For example, not going on a device after a certain time of day, some people won’t take their phones into their bedrooms, so they won’t get distracted from going to sleep. Even just consuming media in a different way would be healthier, “It’s better for example, to spend a bunch of time on Netflix…than say vegging out in front oCNN” (Yakob). There can also be a time limit on a phoneAnother thing people face with the media is getting false information but there are ways to avoid that by checking if the website is out of date, if it’s from a reputable source and just using common sense. Media has many pros and cons to it, and with new media, people will get fed the wrong information, but new media has also helped us in ways like if you’re lost or in an emergency and need to call 911.
