Pinterest in 2019 was the third biggest social media network in the U.S., but how did it
all start? Ben Silbermann, co-founder of the Pinterest, his entire family are doctors and he first worked at Google before reconnecting with Evan Sharp, his college friend, the other co-founder of Pinterest. Ben was a collector and had a bug collection which led to Pinterest but before that he had an app called “Tote” which he created with Evan Sharp as well. Pinterest was created in December 2009 and in March 2010, the mobile Pinterest was launched. Currently, “Pinterest said 85% of pinners use their mobile app,” (Pinterest by The). Pinners are just what the users of Pinterest are called, and pins are the pictures someone puts in the category they make. Pinterest has had mainly the same purpose throughout the years but at the beginning, Pinterest was directed towards women,
“Pinterest originally seemed to start with interests in the home arts like cooking, decorating, fashion, gardening, and other topics of interest to women” (McCoy). It is shown though that 72% of users are women 19% are men and 9% unidentified. Of course, things have been more popular at different times as said in the quote. Originally cooking, decorating fashion etc. was more popular but now, with 367 million monthly active users, different things are popular. You might wonder how Pinterest makes money, getting the app and signing up is free? Well, they make money from the advertisements in-between pins; it was even shown “90% of weekly pinners make purchases on Pinterest” (Pinterest by The). The Pinterest age demographic is 18-29 years old, but people of all ages use Pinterest. It was even shown 40% of Pinterest users are fathers. Pinterest has become more popular over the years and has also become the place to find more appealing photos for projects, cell phone wallpaper and more.
