Week 9 in Precalc 11 – Parent Functions

This week in Precalc 11 I have learned the different type of parent functions and how the placement of numbers can alter where a parabola is on a graph.  I chose to display my learning of parent functions because it is the most important factor of our next unit so knowing how to properly and quickly assess the functions prove to save time graphing and solving. Parent functions could be made up of many parts but the placement of parts are the most important thing to assess, the different areas of parts include, horizontal translation, vertical translation, the stretch and where the parabola opens up or down.

Down below is an example equation including every part to show as a perfect example.

Horizontal Translation- (5) the vertex is going to be 5 units to the left.

Vertical Translation- (-1) the vertex is 1 unit down

Opens up- (2) it is positive so it is minimum going to maximum opening up.

Stretch- (2) A thin/less wide parabola.
