Week 7 in Precalc 11 – The Square Method

What I learn

This week in Precalc 11 I learnt how to solve non perfect equations using something called the square method. I chose to display my learning of using the square method because if you have a non perfect equation the only way I know how to solve it is using the square method. The square method is for when plan A of factoring doesnt work out and now you have to use plan B…. the square method. The square method’s first step is to move constant to the other side of the equation, then you have #x and square2 it. After squaring you have a new constant to take the old ones place, and add or subtract it to the old constant as well. Then you factor, to cancel the square you have to square root both sides of the equation, keep x on one side of move the number to the other side. Write the 2 solutions, and simplify the square root if you can.

Below we have a simple equation that was unable to be factored so now we use the square method. First we move 5 to the other side of the equation. Next we divide 8 by 2 than square the answer giving us 16. 16 is new the constant and we must add it to the other side of the equation. Now we factor x until it is as simplified as it gets, to get rid of the square we must square root both sides. 11 is now under the square root and it will stay like that because we cannot simplify it more. We want x to be alone on one side so we move 4 to the otherside, which now x equals -4 +/- square root 11.
