Define:
Climate change is still happening all over the world, huge amount of carbon is being released into the atmosphere and we are still trying to figure out ways to store or prevent carbon safely. The climate change problem I chose to address is deforestation. Deforestation is the process of cutting down large fields of trees, cutting these trees down release tons of carbon back into our atmosphere, and if we aren’t planting new trees down in their place, the carbon is still stuck in the atmosphere without having those new trees storing it. The population is growing and we need more space so we cut down forests. My challenge is to find solutions to deforestation which I will then draw a model and try to build it in Minecraft.
Discover:
Deforestation means purposely cutting down large amounts of trees for the following, agriculture, animal grazing and using the wood for fuel, manufacturing, and construction. Trees hold a lot of carbon that they store from the atmosphere, when you cut them down they release all of that carbon back into the atmosphere and are not able to hold any more. When it comes too deforestation in Canada we have reduced our deforestation for the past 20 years and we have one of the lowest rates in the world.
Dream:
Here are some ideas I came up with to help with deforestation,
-Plant more trees, plants, and flowers
-Build houses without wood
-Build more apartment buildings
-Find different ways to make fuel
-Reduce the making of paper/use less paper
-Reduce meat consumption
-Try not to use firewood
-Recycle and buy recycled products

In Minecraft I will be demonstrating building a house without wood. Home structures are built with a lot of wood and I plan on making the house structure out of metal or concrete. There is many links below talking about deforestation and about building the house, I embedded the links so you can access them at any time you desire. So why metal or concrete? Metal is more eco-friendly than wood, also better fire resistance and lightweight, ect. Concrete is also more eco-friendly and good sustainability. Building houses out of these materials can save a lot of trees and forests.
This is a rough draft picture before it was built in Minecraft-
Debrief:
My process went well. I was able to find reliable websites to help me complete my define and discover. I found many reliable websites talking about deforestation and building houses, I embedded each website I visited so you can visit them too. I feel like I could improve my product of the drawings of the metal and concrete home, I could have added more information about the structure and explain what is happening in the photo.

Very good explanation of how you used the solution fluency to address an issue. Good work discovering a solution to your issue and citing your sources. You included effective media to demonstrate your solution. Good work. How do the environmental effects of mining for metal compare to the environmental effects of wood construction? Does metal mining play a factor in what is good for the environment?
The environmental affects of metal mining does have an impact on the environment such as deforestation so it wouldn’t be the best solution to replace the wood structure so I would suggest the use of concrete, it would be more environmentally friendly. Metal mining isn’t the best solution but it is one solution, the impacts of metal mining is deforestation, expansion, and contamination of water streams, metal mining isn’t a good factor for the environment.
I am glad you thought deeper about the solution.
I really liked how your explanation of the problem you were trying to solve was very in depth, and found it very useful that you had your websites sourced so that everyone can read more about your topic.
Bronwyn, You did a great job of explaining your understanding of deforestation, I think it is an excellent idea to
stop using wood for housing instead of using concrete or metal. A good solution would be concrete like you said which is more eco-friendly. It would increase toxins, airborne allergens, and molding which would be better because most wood frame houses have these. Concrete houses would also last longer than wood housing. You did a great job finding solutions and I think concrete houses would also be better for sustainability and handling the weather conditions. Would metal, and concrete housing cost more because we don’t have as much metal and concrete availability as wood? Would the metal housing be appropriate for the wet weather we have or would it cause rust? I know there is protection for the weather but we do have a lot of rain here in Vancouver. Overall Amazing job can’t wait to see your house build.
To answer your first question, concrete structures are going to be more exspensive than wood structures because concrete is heavy and hard to transport while metal is cheaper and lighter. Second question, overtime the metal will rust, metal can rust from water or oxygen. But you can take care of it by, scratching off the rust, or apply a protective coating.
Your post was extremely detailed and well written. Your post went in depth about deforestation and how to build a house without wood. I learnt a lot about deforestation and how to build houses without wood. Your drawing was very detailed and you sited your sources. Overall nice post.
