THE VELDT BY RAY BRADBURY – BLACKOUT POEM

Here is my blackout poem on the Veldt. I used CANVA to create this poem.  I ‘found’ this poem on page 35 of the novel The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline

Brennan James poem ‘Disconnection from our mentors’ explores the theme from Ray Bradbury’s The Veldt on how we are becoming disconnected from our important mentors in life due to technology. Our parents, friends, and other family can lead to change in mindset, adulthood, and ones life. It is important to have leadership and guidance to lead a better, productive life. Technology can drift ones focus and destroy the ability to connect with mentors. The wires are a metaphor to explain the obsession with charging and being ‘hooked onto wires’. They are not physically connected to wires, however their obsession with technology is explained through a connection to technology. The poem is mostly metaphorically based. A domain is a internet portal which is also called a website. By ‘fell into her domain’ this is referencing falling into an online domain due to technology, being hooked to technology and websites. ‘Hanging bells’ explains the time oneself would have to reverse an obsession to technology. All of these factors contribute to the disconnection in current life and in The Veldt. Which could be interpreted as ahead of its time. The Veldt explores why children can find guidance through technology and how that influences their choices. The major literary device in the story is satire and how Bradbury uses this to explore his point satirically. In the Veldt, the children are unable to escape this neglect and turn to technology for guidance and leadership. They are disconnected from reality.

Brian is needed to find a poem for his new project at school. He stumbles upon a newer poem called ‘Disconnection from our mentors’. This poem is appealing to him since the amount of technology is introduced into school currently. The poem explores disconnection and the struggles with devices. His parents are strict with devices and he doesn’t have a phone yet. He is too young to understand why, but the poem gives him an idea of why technology can be harmful. He likes school but finds it way easier when he can use it at school. Overall, he understands now that you are able to use devices positively but also negatively.
