Firstly, The Worlds Fair of 1939 – 1940 introduces us to “Nimtron.” A computer allowing many to play the mathematical game of NIM. Nim is a mathematical game where the objective is to either take the last object in a pile or avoid taking the last object depending on the version of the game people are playing. Nim being multiplayer is what makes it the first game involving communication. Second, in 1962 we have the game “Spacewar!”, this was the first game that was playable on multiple computers. It was a multiplayer game where one’s objective was to defeat the other player by destroying their spaceship with a torpedo. Once again the multiplayer aspect makes it related to communication. Next, in 1966 “The Brown Box” was the first at home game console developed by a small team lead by Ralph H. Baer. It never took off, as it was ahead of it’s time. In 2000 the Playstation 2 was released, being the first Playstation to have internet capabilities. In 2001, there was the release of the Nintendo Gamecube, the first Nintendo console with internet capabilities. In 2002 there was the release of the Xbox, coming with Xbox live, began the online gaming adoption, with Halo playing a big role as people enjoyed Halo LAN parties. From 2006-2013, there’s the release of the Wii, having Wi-Fi capabilities for gaming as well as it’s own built in internet browser, including shop for purchasing Digital console games. In 2007, smart phones began becoming popular for online gaming. Mobile gaming started taking off as more games were being released, such as the game Angry Birds. From 2012, Nintendo released the “Nintendo Network” for the Wii U, allowing online play games that support it and video calls while using one of the Wii U’s default apps. Last but not least, in 2014 the Playstation 4 was released with full online capabilities such as: an internet browser, online multiplayer, and game sharing.
