“1984,” a dystopian novel by George Orwell, goes into the life of Winston Smith, a man struggling against a totalitarian regime that employs constant surveillance and mind control. Characterization is the method by which an author reveals the personality, traits, and qualities of a character within a story, allowing readers to understand and connect with them. Direct characterization occurs when the author explicitly describes the traits of a character, providing clear and straightforward details about their personality or appearance. An example of direct characterization about Winston Smith can be found in the opening of “1984”: “Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way.” This explicitly describes Winston’s physical appearance and age, providing readers with a direct insight into his frail and unhealthy state, which contrasts with the vigorous demands of the oppressive regime he lives under. Indirect characterization is when the author reveals a character’s traits through their actions, thoughts, dialogue, and interactions with other characters, allowing readers to infer qualities without being explicitly told. An example of indirect characterization about Winston Smith can be seen in his secretive behavior: “He took out a penholder, a bottle of ink, and a thick, quarto-sized blank book with a red back and a marbled cover. For some reason the telescreen in the living room was in an unusual position. Instead of being placed as to command the whole room, it was in the end wall, and the side wall was in shadow.” This example shows Winston’s cautious and rebellious nature indirectly. His secretive actions in hiding his writing from the omnipresent telescreen suggest his desire for privacy and resistance to the Party’s constant surveillance. Through both direct and indirect characterization, Orwell skillfully brings Winston Smith to life, illustrating his complexities and the profound impact of the oppressive world in which he exists.

1984 Political Spectrum

a) What is the political spectrum?

A political spectrum is a structure for describing and comparing various ideologies, viewpoints, and parties according to their views on issues and programs. Generally speaking, it falls into two camps: left-wing (liberal or progressive) and right-wing (conservative or traditional), with views like authoritarian, libertarian, and centrist falling somewhere in between.

b) What is the difference between left and right wing politics?

The left wing is more liberal and the right wing is more conservative. Liberals focuses more on combating climate change while supporting more active government involvement in addressing social and economic issues. They also involve in progressive social policies, business restrictions, and universal healthcare. Conservatives often want less government involvement, placing a strong emphasis on personal accountability, free-market ideas, conventional social values, reduced taxation, and school choice programs.
c) What is the difference between authoritarian and libertarian governments?

Authoritarian: Concentrated authority, frequently held by a select few or a single leader. substantial authority over societal, political, and financial facets of existence.
Libertarians: Support little involvement by the government. Decentralized power, emphasizing personal liberty and self-determination.

d) Where does the government of Ingsoc and Big Brother fit along the political quadrant scale?

I would say ingsoc and big brother fits along the top right quadrant

Cancel Culture “1984”

The term “cancel culture” refers to the social phenomena in which people or organizations boycott well-known people or businesses because of actions or statements they find offensive or disagreeable. It entails utilizing social media and other channels to publicly humiliate or criticize someone who are thought to have violated the law. This can have serious repercussions, such losing one’s job or harming one’s reputation.

Provide examples of cancel culture in “1984”.

In “1984,” George Orwell compares attempts to stifle dissent and limit speech today to the Party’s use of Newspeak to regulate language and punish Thoughtcrime. Furthermore, the Party’s rewriting of history through the Memory Hole and the Two Minutes Hate rite mirrors trends seen in cancel culture, which erases uncomfortable facts and focuses group hatred on imaginary adversaries.

Do you believe society should be able to cancel someone? Yes, a person should be able to be rejected by society if their deeds or words cause harm and support violence or discrimination. This accountability system promotes responsible behavior in public discourse and aids in upholding social standards.

Who is Withers and who is Ogilvy?

Character Withers is erased from historical records in “1984”, signifying the Party’s capacity to alter history to suit its narrative. In contrast, Winston Smith invented the fake figure Ogilvy to take Withers’ place in records that had been altered. This illustrates how the Party might manipulate the truth in order to keep control over information.

Winston from “1984”

Winston smith is a character in the book called ”1984”. In the book he is apart of a group and if he thinks the wrong way or even if his actions are wrong thinks wrong he will be ”vaporized” and his whole existence will be erased forever every memory, photo, etc will be disappeared. He has a diary which he writes his thoughts into and in his diary he writes about some of the thoughts that he may have but there is always a risk for what he writes or thinks about because the thought police might be on the look for him. In this book the society is kind of in a pyramid shape type society which says the big brother are at the top 2% which is the inner party, then you have the outer party which is a above average group that is not poor but not rich but lastly you have the working class which is trying to make the most money as possible. personally I agree with some things that Winston talks and sometimes even thinks sometimes but there are things such as sexual assault and murder these things I definitely do not agree with. I dislike this guy but I also do like this guy is some aspects.
