A South African Storm

This quote by Gandalf shows that power isn’t what will keep evil at bay, but it is acts of kindness that we can do to bring light into this world. This is also shown through Allison Howard’s essay A South African Storm. She proves that people can make a difference through simple things such as walking in the rain with groceries rather than getting in the car and driving. Although she does end up getting in the car, she wishes she hadn’t so that she could show that she and the South African people were equal. Both Gandalf and the narrator state that everyday acts can be powerful and have  massive impacts on the world. Basic acts such as smiling to those who walk by or holding the door for others may seem very small, but if everyone did them, they could make big differences. Allison attempts to do little things to stray from institutionalized racism, and these small attempts are what can make great change. Gandalf and Allison both share that these small acts of kindness and love can be greater than any sort of power.
