This week we learned about graphing quadratic equations.

The first thing to know, is the parent function: y = x^2

This is the most basic and simple parabola form.

Now, lets say you modify the parent function so it looks like: y = x^2 + 3

This will vertically translate our parabola up by 3 like so:

Now, how about changing the parent function to look like: y = (x-3)^2

This will horizontally translate the parabola to the right by three, as it will go in the opposite direction of the sign the number is:

You can also do this to the parent function: y = 2x^2

This will “stretch” the parabola and make it skinnier:

If you do: y = 0.5x^2

The parabola will be “compressed” and thus become wider:

Finally you can do: y = -2x^2

This will make the parabola open down instead of up:
