Going into the debate the other day, I already had chosen a side on the nuclear energy debate. After the debate my view on it has changed slightly but not too much. I originally was very much so against nuclear energy. I did have a decent understanding of it, and it’s consequences but what really opened my mind more during the debate is seeing it compared to fossil fuels. The one thing aspect about nuclear energy that intrigues me the most is the possibilities. If we can find a safe and efficient way to dispose of the toxic waste from the reactors (send it to mars with Elon Musk?) and ways to assure that there aren’t any more freak accidents then it seems like it would be the ideal energy source due to its efficiency and other than the waste it is clean energy. The real downside to nuclear energy is the possibility that there IS no way found to dispose of the waste and then we’re stuck with extremely damaging toxic waste on our planet. The truly ideal energy source would actually be FUSION nuclear reactors since that would be truly efficient and clean energy without the pesky waste but we’ll have to see if that ever becomes possible. I think the safest bet for the solution to the energy problem is maybe add SOME more reactors but not too many and the further technology comes and assures more safety and good methods of waste disposal then slowly add more and more reactors as it becomes safer and cleaner. The one thing i have become sure about is fossil fuels definitely gotta go, and if it’s not replaced by nuclear reactors it should be replaced by something else instead. I’ve for sure shifted a little further onto the nuclear energy side of this debate because i have faith that scientists and such will find a way to make nuclear energy safe, and clean. It may be taking a risk but sometimes you have to take a risk in order to make change for the better. One thing that’s for sure is if we stick with fossil fuels it will end up bad. The greenhouse gas issue and global warming will get worse as it is very, very real, and the pollution in the air will also get worse and worse. At this moment now nuclear energy is really the only reasonable option so slowly implementing it into new areas seems like a good idea. In the end this discussion really did give me a new view and perspective on this debate and i’m really thankful for that because I try to be as open minded as possible and this really opened my eyes to the upsides of nuclear energy, despite it’s glaring downsides that  most of us focus on.
