EB Proposal

When we first got this project the one thing that I liked the most is that it didn’t matter if we failed the first time because we could just make the project better the next time. I also liked the fact that we were going to help people less fortunate than us and not only that but get to talk to them about their countries and what their needs are. The whole point of engineering brightness is to teach us about the process of innovation, how to make a sketch into a real world product, how to work well as a team, and to create efficient lights that can be powered without plugging it into a wall.

The people we talked to the first time were Eladio and Dennis of the Dominican republic. The second people we talked to were Ian and one of his students from New Brunswick. I thought Ian’s student that came in late had very interesting things to say, the stages her and her group went through to get to success was a great example of self advocation and innovation. I thought the overall experience was very helpful for our EB experience and gave us a better idea of what we should make and what people need it as well as how projects like this are a process and take time and patience.

I enjoyed the overall Skype experience and I think Dennis was especially interested in sharing what he disliked about his countries decision in power source. I do think that we could have made it better by getting everyone to ask questions, but that would take a very long time and wouldn’t work well with the time that we had. I also liked it when the students started talking and gave us more info. I thought Eladio and Dennis had interesting things to say as well as their students.

Learning about what the conditions were and the power regulations were very crucial for us to figure out what could work and what could not.

Getting answers to our question right there and in the moment is very helpful to get work done in a timely manner. I thought the teachers that talked to us had alot of information to give and Ian had experience in the past doing this exact project and that was helpful because he was able to tell us what types of lights work and what don’t.

Plans:

My group of 4 is hoping to create lights that are powered by electromagnetism, we have been lucky enough to be able to talk to Afshin Zarei (Alhan’s electrician father.) We only really have rough idea done right now and we got some sketches done. The way these lights will work is everytime you shake it the battery will get powered more. You will be able to power it throughout the day and use it at night The way that it works is that there is a coiled wire and a magnet inside the battery that create the kinetic charge for the battery.

Here is a draft sketch of how it might look on the inside,

  1. this is a great post!! I really enjoyed reading over your thoughts and ideas. The idea of making lights using kinetic energy is really interesting. I’m glad we are able to collaborate with your group to hopefully create something incredible .
