Tableau Novel- The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian

Tableau

Exposition:

An exposition is basically the introduction, the beginning of a story. And at the beginning of the story, there is a lot of Junior describing his appearance in a negative way because at the beginning he’s kind of like that, he hates himself for the way he looks, but it gets better throughout the story. So the first image, we have kind of like a family photo, and it’s important to know that that’s how junior views his family because we can only see his family through Junior’s perspective. And something that we did to make it look better and more realistic is that I kind of put my hijab down, so it looks like hair.

Initiating Incident:

The initiating incident is the event that sets the main characters on their journey, the thing that starts the conflict of the story. And for initiating the incident we thought it was appropriate to choose the scene where junior smashes Mr. P’s face with a book. He’s so frustrated and angry with the education system he has been receiving considering he was reading the same book that his mother did. And I believe Hayfaa did a fantastic job in this picture because she’s leaning back and she has the book in her hand, making it look alive, the way she’s angled, the way she’s holding the book, and the look on her face that ties it all together and it almost looks like a live movie.

Rising Action 1:

The rising action is a section of a story that leads to rising action two, and it happens after initiating incident. For rising action one, we decided to choose Junior’s first day of going to Reardan. In the picture, there is a bunch of kids circling him, and they look surprised because Junior doesn’t look like them. And something that we did to make it more alive is that he looks down, and he’s almost upset and embarrassed to be there because that’s how junior described his emotions at that very chapter.

Rising Action 2:

The rising action 2 is a section of a story that leads to rising action 3, and it happens after rising action 1. And for Rising action 2 we decided to show the scene where Roger is bullying junior because of his appearance, with the idea that he’s an outsider and that he doesn’t belong to Reardan. Some aspects we added to the picture to make it more realistic is that we made Hayfaa punch Roger, which brought life and action to the picture. You could also see that Rogers’s friends are kind of surprised, shocked at junior’s reaction to the problem because it wasn’t normal to have a physical fight in that town, it was considered uncommon.

Rising Action 3:

The rising action is the section of a story that leads toward its climax. For rising action 3, which is the last rising action, we decided to add the picture when Roger finally accepts Roger’s for being different, for being Indian, and also for being poor. It shows a totally different side of Roger that we hadn’t seen before, and to add a little bit of realism and spice to the picture, I took a screenshot of a $40 bill, and it looks like I’m giving it to junior, which is Hayfaa. Something else that we did is that we also put a bunch of toilet paper on the ground to give it the effect that junior isn’t feeling well, and he’s throwing up.

Climax:

The climax is the point at which the highest level of interest and emotional response is achieved. For the climax which is the most intense part of the story for both the reader and the author, I think it was pretty obvious to choose the big, big basketball games against the rez. I myself was actually really excited to see what would happen in this story and I think it’s very appropriate to choose that scene for the topic; we specifically chose the scene where junior jumps higher than rowdy, which is something huge because rowdy was known to always be better than junior. And to make this image look more realistic and alive we actually took a video of ourselves jumping, then we proceeded to take screenshots to add the effect that we’re jumping in a photo, so our foot isn’t touching the ground, which I think was pretty clever.

Falling Action:

The falling action is what happens near the end of a story after the climax and resolution of the major conflict. My group and I decided that it would be appropriate to choose the scene where summer has come, and Junior is beginning to miss his friends at Reardon for our falling action. Junior realizes that Reardon was kind of a distraction because now that it’s gone, he’s come to the reality that his only friend was rowdy and there obviously not friends anymore, so he really starts to miss the old days, when rowdy unexpectedly shows up at the door. And I’m acting as rowdy, and so something that I did was that I’m kind of leaning forward in the picture to show that I’m walking in, and you could see hayfaa’s facial expressions resembling that she’s unhappy, and almost kind of depressed, missing the old days.

Conclusion:

A conclusion is the last part of the story, and we chose the scene where Junior and Rowdy are finally friends again after all they’ve been through together. We can really see that Rowdy finally accepts Junior for his choices and doesn’t see him leaving the rez as an act of betrayal anymore, because that’s the perspective he has been looking at it for the whole time. But he finally saw that Junior only left for a better life, he wants to be someone to do something with his life. And something that we did to the picture to make it more alive is that you can see that me and hayfaa we’re looking at each other and we’re kind of talking to each other with our eyes; you can kind of see the friendship in our eyes.
