Propaganda in 1984

Propaganda is information, commonly biased that is used to promote political points of view. Propaganda is used by governments and political parties to attempt to persuade people’s opinions. Throughout the novel propaganda appears through omnipresent Big Brother Is Watching You posters. War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, and Ignorance is Strength are slogans that The Party employs and are a prime example of propaganda in the novel. A propaganda technique used in 1984 is, Deification. The novel presents the Deification of Big Brother, a man who possesses total power over all citizens. An example of the deification of Big Brother is that he alters history, manipulating people to believe that he has been able to truthfully predict events and to convince people that he is changing things for the better. Another propaganda technique used in the novel is, Misuse of Statistics. An example of Misuse of Statistics is the chocolate rations. Big Brother and The Inner Party altered newspaper article statistics to make it appear that the ration size had increased, when in reality it was lowered. Fear is a propaganda technique used in 1984. Big Brother uses fear to control his citizens. This technique is shown through the citizens being under constant surveillance and if they make a mistake, they will likely be vaporised.
