Community Connection
By Ayden Wagner
For the COL Community Connection project, I interviewed Arabella Rosier. Arabella Rosier is an independent author, or an Indie author for short. An Indie author is someone who self-publishes their book and keeps control of its publishing rights. Indie authors and most self-publishing authors intend to make a profit, where some self-publishing authors tend to only give their books to family and close friends. Arabella Rosier’s role as an indie author would include, writing, sourcing final editors, organising shipping companies, hiring cover artists, and so much more!

I chose to interview Arabella Rosier for a few reasons. I have always wanted to be an author and I have written a few short stories myself. I felt that since it is a career path that interests me, it would be cool and interesting to interview someone who is an author. Arabella Rosier is an entrepreneur. Indie publishing is something that takes a lot of guts, which is another reason why I chose her. Finally, Arabella Rosier is a book lover, as am I!
I learned some of the steps of indie publishing from interviewing Arabella Rosier. I had known in my mind that indie publishing would be a difficult process if I ever decided to become an author and chose the path of indie publishing – my interview with Arabella Rosier confirmed my suspicions. I realized even though it is a hard process, as long it is what you want more than anything it is possible to get through the process and gain many skills. Arabella Rosier taught me different ways that she used to get over writers’ block. Lots of the things she said about curing writers block had never crossed my mind, but after reading her response to my question I realized how well her methods can help. The question on curing writers block connects to my passions as I love to come up with stories in my head but lots of times when I go to try and write them my mind feels blank.
The Interview:
(All direct quotations of Arabella Rosiers responses).
- Can you explain your roles and responsibilities with your current position?
“I’m essentially just getting my book baby out into the world and it entails a lot more than I thought honestly! Everything to writing, to editing, sourcing final editors, cover artists, formatters, the wide world of indie publishing that is figuring out IngramSpark and KDP, as well as stuff such as organising a shipping company and buying myself a label maker for preorders! I wouldn’t change it for the world though, it’s so much fun being entirely hands on!”
- What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?
“As for obstacles, just entrepreneur-ing it has been interesting at times. Learning about publishing mostly from my own research and reaching out to other authors with the same experiences. Figuring out all the dos and donts of publishing for the first time!”
- What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?
“My biggest advice to anyone would be to just write. Even if you think your draft is awful, write it. Don’t hyper fixate on it, just get that draft out. You can always hire editors to help you, but getting that first draft out can be the biggest challenge.”
- Why are you passionate about your job or role?
“I just love writing-I adore the worlds I can map out in, my mind, the souls you can breathe into the characters, the possibilities at your finger tips… Seeing your baby, that you dreamt of and made from scratch, come alive and into your hands is the best feeling in the world.”
- If you ever acquired writers block, how did you overcome it?
“Writers block can be a devil! The best way to overcome it I’ve found is to talk about your book, brainstorm with people, make a Pinterest board, do some creative research. Just get into the vibe and the ideas flow! Also nature really helps me, it clears my mind and ideas tend to pop out of nowhere. Anything that clears and soothes your mind, so that ideas can root and take place, works wonders!
- Where does your inspiration come from while you’re creating your story and characters?
“Oh, inspiration is a funny one. It’s hard to label it to be honest. Most of it comes from the imagination and existing tales-I love stories about space/stars, of myths and folklore-and I suppose in a way those tales take place in your heart and transform into a lust for creating your own words and own stories. It truly is amazing to see it happen!”
Opportunities this interview opened for me:
This interview opened many new opportunities for me. I now think that if I ever become an author, I will take the indie publishing route. Another opportunity this interview opened for me is, realising I’m able to communicate with other authors to ask about their experience with writing and/or indie publishing.
