Ecology Mini Scrapbook Assignment

Observe an organism:

The organism I chose to observe was a bird. This organism interacts with the atmosphere because it relies on oxygen to survive. It breaths oxygen, in and out. The bird interacts with the geosphere because it walks on the rocks, soil and even sand. The bird interacts with the hydrosphere because it needs water to survive. Birds drink water when they are thirsty, and they will also use water for bathing. Lastly, this bird interacts with the biosphere because it is a living creature. It is alive and it makes life too.

Biological community:

Producer: The producer in this photo is the berry. The berry makes its own food to get energy needed to survive.

Consumer: The consumer in this photo is the fly. The consumer eats other organisms to survive and get energy.

Decomposer: In this picture, the decomposer is the fungus that is on the tree. The fungus breaks down the organic material that is dead, so they could survive and gain energy.

Which organisms store energy through photosynthesis?

The organism that stores energy through photosynthesis is the primary producer, which is the berry.

Which organisms release energy through cellular respiration?

The organism that releases energy through cellular respiration is the decomposer, which is the fungus.

Ecologically linked:

Food Pyramid:                                        Food Web:

The consumer from a food web that is a threatened species could go extinct. If the population continues to decline, then there will be none of that organism left.

Energy Sway and MLA letter/Information Fluency Project

Dear Honourable George Heyman,

Hi, I’m a student from Riverside Secondary school. I have been doing some research about the MV Marathassa in the English Bay. I found the information very interesting and it seems like the MV Marathassa oil leak caused lots of problems. The leak affected the environment and many birds but the hardest part was when they had to clean all of it up. After the oil leak, they tried to fix anything that was damaged. But, has a plan even been made for the future so that cargo ships are safer? Well, after the incident, the Canadian Coast guard wanted to find ways to prevent, or be able to handle future marine spills. So, the Canadian Coast guard managed to find 25 ways. Hopefully, using this information, there won’t be any more marine spills. But, I wonder how did the oil spill happen in the first place?

Sincerely, Ayana M

Coquitlam BC

Ask:

These are the critical questions I came up with to answer my fundamental question:

  • What is the MV Marathassa?
  • How much oil was leaked into the ocean?
  • How was the oil spill a problem?

This was my fundamental question:

  • How did the problems caused by the leaking oil affect the environment/animals?

Acquire:

For my information:

  •  Gale Engage Learning

 For my pictures:

  • Pexels
  • Creative Commons

Analyze:

I think that analyzing my work was easy and not too complicated. When I was coming up with my critical questions, I had to first do research about my topic. Then after I knew what the MV Marathassa was, I then came up with questions to answer. After the critical questions, I came up with an essential question to answer. Before I created my Sway, I took notes and wrote all my sources down so that I would not forget. Then after I finished taking notes, I created my Sway and cited my sources. For all the information that I found, I clicked the citation button and I was easily able to add it to my Sway.

Assess:

For my overall product, I think it went well. During my process, It was difficult to come up with my essential question. I found it difficult because there were a lot of different options to use as my question. In my opinion, I found enough information to answer the critical and essential questions. I also think that I put enough detail into my writing. So, I think my overall Sway had enough detail and I also like the questions that I came up with.

Mitosis and Meiosis Stop Motion Project

Group Members Names: Ayana & Kaylen

1. Was mitosis or meiosis easier to model?

For me, Mitosis was easier to model because there weren’t as many steps as Meiosis. Meiosis has a lot of steps that I had to include in my video, so I thought Mitosis was easier.

2. What was the most challenging thing in making your movie?

The most challenging thing in making my movie was when I had to keep my phone straight while taking the pictures so it would look nice. I did not want to move my phone too much because the movie would not have the best results.

3. What was the easiest thing to do in making your movie?

I think the easiest thing to do when I was making my movie was when I was setting up all the materials I needed to make my video.

4. How could you improve your movie?

I think that I could improve my movie by taking better pictures. For example, next time I could get a phone stand so that my camera would not move, and every picture would look the same.

5. Thinking about how you worked with your partner(s), what were some of the challenges and successes of working in a group?

In my group, I think one of the challenges was when we were trying to do equal amount of work. While one person was shaping the Play Dough and taking the pictures, the other person was editing the video and getting the materials. One success of working in a group was that we were able to both work on different things at once to save time.

6. Why is Mitosis important? In other words, what is the point of cells performing Mitosis?

Mitosis is important because it is the reproduction of cells. It is also important because it helps organisms grow.

7. Why is Meiosis important? In other words, what is the point of cells performing Meiosis?

Meiosis is important because it produce gametes. Another reason why Meiosis is important is because it helps humans grow.

Electric House 3D – Solution Fluency

For this project, I was in a group with  Kate, and  Kaye and we created a 3D electric house. We made a house with three rooms. One bathroom, bedroom and kitchen.

Define: What was the challenge?

For this project, the challenge was when we were trying to find something to hold the battery in place. We needed to hold the battery in place because while one person was testing out the lights and the switches, two of us were holding the battery but our arms kept shaking which made it hard to properly test out the switches. Since our arms were shaking, it was difficult to keep the wires from separating from the battery.

Dream: What innovative ideas did you have about how this problem could be solved?

We thought of multiple ways to fix our problem. For example, one way was to tape the battery to the wall of the house. After we tried that, the battery was slowly slipping out of the tape so we tried a different method. We then tried to make a small cardboard box that would fit the battery, but it also was not very stable. So, we decided to make a 3D printed battery holder from Tinkercad.

Deliver: How will you package and publish your solution?

While we were using Tinkercad, we created a battery holder using our own design. We chose this design because it was a simple way to insert the battery. But, while we were creating this design, our measurements were off. When we first created the design, we went to the library to print our design, but the librarian told us that our design would be too big for the machine to print. So, we had to resize our design. But when we went there for the second time, the librarian still told us that it would be too big. So we kept trying a couple more times and we finally got our measurements right.

Debrief: How did the process go?

I think that the process of this project was a fun experience, because we got to build something really cool and we had to solve our problems ourself. We all shared our ideas for the designs and we all helped each other out. We worked together to create our 3D battery holder. We also made it so that while the battery was on the holder, none of us needed to hold the wires to attach it to the battery. I think that I really enjoyed this project, because I got to work with other people and share my ideas to create something cool.

HCE 9 – English Write

In this image, I see lots of people looking at the camera for a photo. It looks like they are taking pictures at a residential school. For example, they are all sitting and looking up at the picture. I notice that there are some children in the front row and adults in the back. The people are split up into sections by how they are dressed. The people that are wearing colourful clothing, are on the right side. While the people wearing no interesting colours are on the left side. This image makes me feel confused. At first when I see the image, it looks like there are a lot of emotions, so it is confusing. But when I stare at it for longer, I feel a bit sad and notice the details. I start to think of the situations in the photo. For example, I started to notice the way that their facial expressions are. I also noticed the difference in their body language. For example, the people on the right have nice poses and some of their heads are tilted in a fun way. But the people on the left are just sitting down straight and looking up at the camera.  I think the image is trying to show what residential schools did to them. It looks like a lot is happening. For example, the people all the way to the left have no colour on their face. But towards the middle I see that their faces have some colour. I think that what is happening is that the journey starts from the left, going to the right side. For example, the people were in residential schools and as they slowly got older, they started to get their culture back. Which is why towards the middle, people’s faces are not gray. It could also be from the opposite way. For example, it could be the indigenous people enjoying their culture, but slowly lose it in the residential school. So that is why I think that the topic is about indigenous people and their “journey” growing up, or their journey going through residential school.  The image also looks like the people are enjoying their time and some others people that are not happy. I think the effect that the colours have on the viewer is that the more colourful side is supposed to be the happy and fun side, but the gray and plain side is supposed to be the sad, and boring side.  For the angle, we are looking from above. The camera is facing downwards and all the people in the picture are looking up towards the camera. I think that the camera angle affects how we see the situation. For example, the camera angle shows all the people and how they look. But if the camera angle was lower, you would not be able to see all the people and their emotions. The message of respect means to treat everyone equally. For example, if there is someone that looks different, you should still treat them with respect. Everyone should be treated equally, no matter who they are. Even If you do not like their race. Respect is to be kind, and to not shame people. For example, if there is someone you do not like, you should not go out of your way to be rude to them. You could simply walk away or ignore that person so that you do not cause any problems. By having respect, it will build trust, and safety.

3. Is this job for you? Why or why not?

This job is not for me, because I would not like to be around criminals. I also would not like to wake up early in the morning, because I like to get the right amount of sleep.

4. Explain the value of the TOKTW experience in relation to your ideas about your post secondary (after high school) plans (education? training? travel? work?).

I think that my experience during “take your kid to work day” gave me an idea of what to do when I am older. It showed me what It was like to do a serious job. The job that I want to get, and the job that my mom has is a little similar because they both involve working with people. But other than that, my mom’s job does not relate to the job I want when I am older. It was nice trying out new things and seeing what it was like at my mom’s work. I also found it really interesting, and I wish I could have seen more, and learned more about what she does.

Grammar Video Project – Run-On Sentences

https://youtu.be/sJ4UpDDZx7A

In our grammar video, we talked about run-on sentences. We explained the definition of what a run-on sentence was and provided some examples. A run-on sentence is when a couple of complete sentences are put together without any proper punctuation or conjunctions. An example of these punctuations and conjunctions would be “periods”, “semicolons” and “commas”. Here is an example of a run on sentence.

Example: I get bubble tea with my friends every once in a while we always pick delicious flavours.

In our video, we also explained what a proper sentence would be. Like how to write proper paragraphs that would not include run on sentences. We explained the rules you need when writing a proper sentence. For example, you should not forget to use periods, commas and semicolons in your sentences. It would also be good if you made your sentences a good length. Meaning, not too short and not too long.

Using periods in a proper sentence would be to finish the sentence where it is. Whoever is reading the sentence would not be able to tell when the sentence is done if there is no period at the end. Commas in a sentence are great for when you want to take a pause in your writing before continuing to the next part. Using a semicolon is to replace a period and a comma. A semicolon is for when two sentences are related but it would be too long to add another comma. But also, it would replace the period so that you can finish the sentence without completely ending it.
