This is my Sgraffito tile rough draft

My inspiration that I used for my tile was a sunflower. My partner that I am connecting my tile with is Krisleine. We are both doing flowers and we are connecting the stem of our flowers together.

I put paint on my tile after I finished cutting it out.

This is when I carved my flower after the paint dried.

This is my sgraffito tile when I put my border and before It went in the Kiln.

After my tile came out of the Kiln, this is how it looked.

This was after I glazed it, my tile is finished.

For my life below water project, I would like to make a Starfish out of clay. These are the three images that I will use for my inspiration.

     .

There are some threats that Starfish have to go through. Something that affects Starfish are big waves in the ocean.  Another threat to Starfish are crabs, because they eat the Starfish.

The solution for waves is that Starfish have suction cups on the ends of their feet. So, they can hold themselves onto the rocks while there are waves passing by. Starfish can protect themselves from crabs because they have tiny spines on their body to keep them safe.

For my inquiry project I would like to make a square plate. These are my 3 inspiring photos that I have found.

I want to make this plate because I have always wanted to make something that I could eat out of. Others have created plates and they added little designs on the inside. Using clay, they have created bowls, or plates the shape of a square. They have even painted their creations with colourful paint.

My goal for this project is to make my plate the right shape and to make it look nice. Some challenges that I might face in completing my goal is if the clay is hard to work with. It might also be hard to paint the plate. I could solve these challenges by going at a steady paste while I paint. I could also carve any of the parts on my plate that was a mistake.

Starfish

April 13, 2023, Ceramic, Acrylic

Ayana Morris

Starfish are endangered because of the big waves in the ocean that disturb the starfish, and the crabs that try to eat them.

Starfish save themselves because they have suction cups on the ends of their feet. So, they can hold themselves onto the rocks while there are waves passing by. Starfish can also protect themselves from crabs because they have tiny spines on their body that can keep them safe.

Inquiry Plate

June 4, 2023, Ceramic, Underglaze & Glaze

Ayana Morris

My idea was to make a plate that is food safe. For this idea, my original plan was to just make a simple white plate. But I added more to my plan and painted a little heart in the top left corner of the plate. What I learned during the making of this project was that it takes a lot of patience to try and make the plate the right shape you want it to be.

Paper Mache Mask

June 15, 2023, Paper Mache, Acrylic

Ayana Morris

For this project I was planning on making a Red Panda. My original idea was to make a full mask. My idea stayed the same the whole time and nothing changed. When I was making the eyes, my idea changed multiple times. I first planned on making clay eyes then painting it with underglaze and glaze. But the eyes popped out too much, so I decided to remake the eyes.

But after I remade the eyes, I painted it with acrylic paint instead and still decided that I did not like it. So, I decided to just keep it simple and paint eyes on the mask instead. The materials I used were cardboard, acrylic paint, powdered Paper Mache and masking tape. I used cardboard to create the whole shape of the mask. The masking tape was to support the cardboard, so it doesn’t fall apart. The powdered Paper Mache was to make the nose. Then, the paint was to make the colour, so it looked like a Red Panda. I chose to make a red panda because it is my favourite animal and I have similar traits. The Red Panda is gentle and patient, and I am a patient and gentle person. Which is why I am like a Red Panda.

For the collaborative studio maintenance assignment, I worked with Krisleine. The section that we cleaned was the tool space.

The items that we cleaned were knives. These knives are used for cutting and shaping clay to get the design that you want. This is how the knives looked like. They should look clean and there should be no dried up clay still on them.

I will collaboratively maintain this area by washing the tools with a teammate. Krisleine will wipe the tools with a sponge, then I will rinse them with water afterwards.

This is the picture after we finished cleaning the items.

The maintenance of these items contributed to the classroom because now other people can use these tools and clay will not get all over their hands. It is better to use cleaner tools when working.
