Shakespeare-graphic novel

This graphic novel is about a midsummer nights dream. It demonstrates my comprehension of the story. it hows my comprehension because I have pulled out the key plot points turned it into a graphic novel and put it in my own words. That is how I feel this graphic novel has displyed my comprehension of a midsummer nights dream. I hope it helps you to understand this story to.

stop motion : the veldt

Our project is about the veldt. I helped with voiceover work and building stuff as well as getting stuff for my teamates. This project was challenging and time consuming, I really enjoyed and think i would want to make stop motion on my own sometime. It took us longer then excpected but we did complete and i am very proud of what my team has accomplished. There were some tough moments like when things wouldnt connect the ay we wanted them do and it was a very slow process. Overall i am happy with this project and believe we have put our best effort foreward with this project.

community connections

for my community connection I connected with Dana Ionson a librarian at Terry Fox Library

why are you passionate about your job ?

Because libraries! Libraries are amazing. They are the hub of the community. We have something for everyone! Regardless of age, gender, ability, income, you can join the library, use our resources and come to programs. Library programs connect people to each other and to their community. Library programs enrich the lives of community members.

what obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?

I think the hardest thing for me was finding libraries! I didn’t grow up using libraries and didn’t really think about public libraries as an option for me. I finished my undergraduate degree in anthropology knowing that I liked research. I went into the MLIS program (Master in Library Science) thinking that I would work for an organization and do research. After the first term in the MLIS program I was on a summer break and a student position came up at the Squamish Public Library (where I’m from). I got the summer job and fell in love with libraries. I was very lucky – when I graduated with my MLIS there was a full job at the Maple Ridge Library that I started right away! This is not typically the experience of new graduates. Most new librarians need to work on call for some time before getting a permanent position.

what advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

Try to get some experience/insight into the library world. Join the Teen Advisory Group ( for youth) or Friends of the Library (for adults) and get involved. Come to library programs and get a better understanding of what libraries do. Visit the library often and borrow our resources! Once you are sure that you are interested in a career in the library investigate what education you need for the type of job you want. For a list of jobs and the education they require check here: https://www.fvrl.bc.ca/careers.php

would you be open to further contact from riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you?

For sure! They can email me dionson@fvrl.bc.ca

what are the education requirement for your position?

The librarian position requires a Masters. I have a Bachelor’s degree from UVIC in anthropology and a Masters in Library Science from UBC.

what are your favorite and least favorite parts of your job?

Favourite: helping customers find information or other materials that they would like. I especially love helping kids finding books that they are excited about. I love leading programs that bring people together or connect people to the library. I have so much fun leading storytimes for young kids, going out to schools to visit older kids and leading the monthly ukulele jam! (one of my favourite programs).

Least Favourite: balancing all of my duties. When I’m helping customers on the floor I often have a list of other things that I need to do, like; organize upcoming programs, communicate with other staff in FVRL on projects that we’re working on, and make sure I’m on top of my emails! There’s just not enough time.

I chose to interview ms.Ionson because I love going to the library and I am interested in working in a library someday.

I learned  a lot form this interview for example I learned about the education requirements for this field and I learned more about what librarians do. I always thought being a librarian meant checking out books, shelving books and recommending books to people I didn’t think about the fact that librarians also have to organize programs at the library and order in new books.

Pouvoir!

Information Fluency

part 1 – share

 wind turbines – my information

  1. How they work the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a rotor which is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to create electricity. Wind Turbine Landscape PhotographyThe turbines need a sustained wind speed of 9 mph to function however turbines do not operate at wind speeds above about 55 mph because they may be damaged by the high winds. Wind turbine blades do kill birds but the amount of deaths is extremely low espescially when compared to nuclear and fossil fuel plants which kill 2118 birds for every 1 bird killed by a wind turbine. Windmill PhotographySound levels from turbines are typically no more than about 55 decibels. To put that in perspective a vacuum cleaner is 80 decibels and a blender is 90. It is a clean energy source which means that it doesn’t pollute the air or use any destructive chemicals. they are also a renewable source of energy.Wind Turbines Under Blue Sky

2. Dear Mr. Trudeau, I have been doing some research on wind turbines and decided I would like to share my findings with you to help you decide if these are a viable option for Canada. What I found was a lot of the common complaints against wind turbines are relevant but exaggerated for example one of the big complaints is that they are killing birds and well this is true they are not the bird killing machines they are made out to be in fact more birds are killed by nuclear and fossil fuel plants then by wind turbines. Another one of the big complaints is that they are very noisy but in fact there only 55 decibels loud which means a blender is louder than one of these turbines. Now for some background information on how these turbines work. Basically, the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a rotor which is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to create electricity. Now there is something to consider about these turbines they need a sustained wind speed of 9 mph to function however turbines do not operate at wind speeds above about 55 mph because they may be damaged by the high winds. nonetheless, it is a clean energy source which means that it doesn’t pollute the air or use any destructive chemicals. It is also a renewable energy sources. Hopefuly this has helped you learn more about wind turbines and if they are a good choice for our country. Thank you for taking the time to read this sincerely, Ava.

part 2

  1. What questions did you need to research in order to research your topic? The questions I researched were how does it work?, Does it kill birds?, Are they noisy?, If there’s no wind does that mean no power?, what are some advantages to wind power and what are some disadvantages to wind power.
  2. What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project. some tools I used were google and pexels.
  3. What was the process you used to investigate this topic? the process i used to investigate this topic was I came up with my list of questions and i researched them.
  4. How did you verify and cite the information you found? I checked multiple sources and if they were saying simikar things i new it was probably true. to cite the information i put a list of sources.
  5. How did the process of completing this challenge go? what could you have done better? the process if compleating this challenge went well. something i could have done better is maybe tried something like gale.

A Fresh Look at the periodic table

Define : the challenge given to us was to reorganize the periodic table

Dream : we decided to make it easier to find stuff on the periodic table we sorted the elements by family all the mebers of the family were in a circle together. we decided to foucus on family because it was easier t orember if something was a metal or non metal then to rember it’s sign or atomic number.

Deliver : we were sucessful in making our table here is a picture

Debrief : the process went well my group worked ogether to create a sucessful product and i am happy with the result.

Digital Footprint

How might your digital footprint affect your future?

my digital footprint might affect my future opportunities in several different ways. It could affect my future opportunities negatively if a potential school or employer sees something negative about me such as a post that is racist, sexist or discriminatory in some way. It could also affect me negatively if they see something I posted when I was younger that wasn’t very smart. however, it could also affect me positively if I have a good digital footprint with no rude or unkind posts or if they see some interesting projects I’ve done or see some experiences I’ve had that will make me a better candidate for the job or school.

https://www.pexels.com/photo/apps-blur-button-close-up-267350/

describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe?

three strategies you can use to keep your digital portfolio appropriate and safe are 1. think before you post it’s important to think before you post because sometimes in the heat of the moment you could post something you might regret later. 2. another thing I can do is not post anything I wouldn’t want my parents to see this is a good rule to follow because often if my parents shouldn’t see it no one should. I final thing I could do is Have privacy settings on my accounts  so that  only people I know can see what I post.

https://www.pexels.com/photo/photography-of-people-using-smartphones-1413653/

what information that you learned would you pass on to other students. how would you go about telling them.

I learned that what we post on the internet as kids/teens  has a big effect on our futures. so we shoul be careful about what we post also I learned that we need to read the terms and condititons before we randomly click agree because we don’t acutaly know what we are agreeing to. To communicatethis t others I would make a poster or just inform people I know by telling this information.
