Community connection

For my community connection I chose to interview Leticia, the owner of The Clever Cupcakes in Coquitlam, BC. I chose to contact her because I too have a passion for baking and was interested in learning about how she runs her bakery. I also chose to interview her because I was interested in the fact that Clever cupcakes has a variety of different allergen/dietary restriction friendly options. These options include dairy, gluten, sugar and egg free. They even carry vegan products!

I contacted Leticia through the Clever cupcakes (her company)’s Instagram account over direct messages, here are a few screenshots from our conversation:

1.Why are you passionate about your job or role?

Leticia is passionate about her job because she has been baking since she was just ten years old!

2. What obstacles have you faced to get where you are today?

One big obstacle she has faced is English not being her first language. Spanish is Laticia’s first language which caused language barriers to be an obstacle she had to overcome.

3. What advice would you pass on to someone interested in what you are doing?

“They have to love baking because, you have to dedicate to much time to be successful”

4. What gave you the idea to start an allergy/dietary restriction friendly bakery?

She was inspired to create an allergy friendly bakery when “I found that there are not many places that bake for people with allergies” [or other dietary restrictions].

5. What is your favorite part of your job?

“When I am baking, I feel apart of a celebration for someone” said Leticia, “That makes me happy”.

6. Would you be open to further contact from Riverside students and if so, how can someone contact you?

She said she would be open to further contact and can be easily contacted through her company’s Instagram (Clever cupcakes)direct messages.

This interview allowed me to learn more about success and Leticia’s baking journey, which connects to me because I am interested in continuing down a similar path of baking. It has opened up the opportunity to connect with/talk to a local baker who shares my interests. Who knows, maybe someday my passion of baking will lead me to also opening up my own bakery!
