Digital Footprint

How might your digital footprint affect your future opportunities?

In the future my digital footprint could impact some major things about my life in many ways. One way it could affect me is when I am trying to get a job. For example if I applied for a job they might do a background check and if they google me and see any bad or inappropriate comments or photos they may decide to not hire me. Another way it could affect me is my relationships with people. An example of this is if someone sees something offensive or rude I wrote online they may not want to be friends. It could also cause anyone I know or am friends with to not want to be associated with me anymore.

Describe at least three strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.

There are a few ways that I know of to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe. One way is to remind yourself before you post ANYTHING on the internet or in a text that it is permanent and even if you delete it, it will still forever be out on the internet. Also to imagine in your mind how you would feel if you were an employer, would I hire someone who said this on the internet? Another way to stay safe is to have a private account, and not share any private info with people on the internet. Even if you know who that person is you still shouldn’t tell them your address for example because you cant 100% trust the privacy of the internet. A third way to stay safe and appropriate on the internet is to actually read through the terms and conditions that you are agreeing to. Even if you just skim through them it is good to know what information you are agreeing to share with the app or other users.

What information did you learn that you would pass on to other students? How would you go about telling them?

Something that I learned that I would pass on to other students is that everything is permanent. Anything you post on the internet will forever be out their for the world to see. Even if you delete it, a post or text can still be recovered. I would pass this on to others by letting them know that everything is permanent and to think before you post if I see that someone is about to post something offensive or inappropriate. I would also help them delete anything from their profiles that isn’t an example of a positive digital footprint.
