Explain what role you think statistics have in our society:

Statistics show us so many things whether it be how many people around the world have green eyes or the weather forecast. they are also used for insurance, political campaigns, in the stock market and so many other things.

Explain anything new that you have learned about the importance of statistics in our society:

After reading the article, I learned that if a researcher wants to know if one method of treating a disease is more affective than another, it is important that they know the statistics to show the percentage of the time each method worked on groups of patients. Also, there is a part that talks about headlines of “Released Prisoner Doesn’t Commit Murder” and based on what we see reported, our mental image of percent of prisoners that actually murder someone after being released is likely to be much greater than what happens in reality. Statistics give us a way to look at the big picture and they are a way to get a more accurate way of understanding than what we get from individual observations.

Describe the different types of problems with statistics

  1. statistics can be fabricated.
  2. some other problems arise because of the way statistics are gathered, like bad sampling and biases introduced into polls and surveys.
  3. Some statistics are true but misleading
  4. the problem with ranking statistics are that they are not always clear about what the categories are that are being ranked.
  5. Percentages: news sources typically try to make the number sound as dramatic as they can.

The Friday Everything Changed Trailer

For our trailer, we chose the Friday Everything Change. By completing this COL project, I learned how to make a movie trailer and how to pick the most important parts of the story. I think that I have gained more insight into the story by making this video. Collaborating with someone else was hard at times as we had different ideas and it was hard to find a time to work on this outside of class.

Small Acts of Kindness

The picture relates to the Friday Everything Changed because Ms Ralston had a big impact on the class when she did a small act of kindness, hitting a homerun and then letting girls go for water the next week. A small act of kindness is meant to brighten someone’s day or lift their spirits. Some examples are bringing cookies to your friends or grandparents when you see them, baking brownies for your family, or helping a friend with homework. I think that Terry Fox is ont the forefront of change. He was trying to raise money that would go towards cancer research by running across Canada.

First People’s Principles of Learning

interconnectedness:

Interconnectedness is when everyone/everything is connected. Most things have a chain reaction since everything is connected. The one part of a food chain rely on  each other. If you remove on part of the food web, some other parts of the web might disappear. I remember watching a video called “how wolves change rivers” in grade 8. It tells you about what happened when they reintroduce wolves in Yellowstone National park after 70 years of not being there. A few things that changed without the presence of the wolves were the number of deer went up due to the fact that there were nothing to hunt them, and the vegetation reduced to almost nothing. When they reintroduced the wolves, a bunch of things changed. The behavior of the deer changed, some of the tree’s height quintupled in just 6 years, the wolves killed coyote which meant the number of rabbit and mice went up. There is much more that changed and it tells you the rest in the video. I think this video is a good way to show what happens when you remove something from a food web and when you add it back in.

sustainability:

Sustainability is taking care of your resources and making sure it lasts for the future. First people make sure that they cherish and take care of their resources so that they know that they will have enough for their future and the future of their children, grand-children, ect. If we dont take care of our resources we wont have enough for the future. If we cut down trees to make money and we keep cutting them down because people think we need more money but we dont. We might end up cutting too many trees down and not plant any so there wont be enough oxygen for everyone on earth to breathe and there will be so much carbon dioxide it will get hard to breathe. If we don’t decrease the amount of fossil fuels and wood that we are burning we create even more carbon dioxide. We need to plant trees instead of cut them down, burn less fossil fuels and wood, and take care of our environment. We need to take inspiration from the first peoples and take care of out land so we have enough resources for the next 7-8 generations.
