According to what I’ve read and studied, the Trickster is a significant figure in First Peoples literature because they use humour, mistakes, and storytelling to share important teachings. In addition to being fictional figures, tricksters like Coyote, Nanabush, and Raven are symbols for creativity, change, and a connection with the earth and community. They challenge rules, expose human weakness, and provide people with new perspectives on reality. Tricksters also exist outside the limits of gender or one identity, and they keep Indigenous culture alive by showing that learning and growth can happen through laughter, chaos, and storytelling. They still change, adapt, and lead through stories today as they are not just in the past.
