Multiplication of polynomials using distributive law
In week 6 we learned about polynomials. A necessary part in this unit was the multiplication of polynomials, since it’s the base of everything we learned. To multiply polynomials, you can use the distributive law (or an area model or algebra tile model)
To begin, distribute the number outside of the brackets, into the brackets. Expand and simplify until you can’t anymore.
Example:
Vocabulary:
Expand: opening brackets to create more expressions
Simplify: reducing expression to a simpler form
Algebra tile mode: visual representation that helps people see the expression drawn out
Area model: another visual representation referring to multiplication and exponent law
