Week 3 – Math 10 – Scientific Notation

Scientific Notation

In week 3 we learned about scientific notation. Before math 10 I’ve never heard of scientific notation but I’ve found it’s a very useful tool when it comes to large numbers or really small ones.

To begin, look at the number in standard notation. Then you count how many numbers there are, excluding the first number. Then you divide the number by 10 to the power of however many numbers you counted, and you’re left with a single number from 0-9.99. Then to write it in scientific notation you write the number you are left with times 10 to the power of whatever you divided the standard notation by.

Example:

Vocabulary:

Scientific notation: A technique to write a large number in a simple way.

Exponent: The number of times a base is multiplied by itself.

Coefficient: A number multiplied by a variable.
