Speculative Fiction – Dystopia

Being Pretty, by Dead Sound

The short film “Being Pretty” is a dystopian world where in the town of “Auto Dale” is run by a group of robots with a higher power at their center. In the short film it shows how the city is run and how its society lives their lives. Each person that the leader deems acceptable lives a life almost mirrored to the lives of families in the early 1900s. The only difference is that anyone who has a disability or a different preference to the majority is deemed “ugly”. Those who are deemed “ugly” are normally sent to death. Everyone else is considered normal. The “normals” get to live their lives as they are forced to. For example, a “normal” man will provide for the family, while a “normal” girl will cook and clean for the family and read the kids bedtime stories. The short film is speculative fiction because it is an obvious dystopian future, where the world has been taken over by a god like creature and an army or robots. The short film fits under the category of “Dystopian Fiction” because, “That poor, lonesome thing seemed awfully burdened by his creation” (Autodales Exceptional Girl, 6:16 Immortal machine) as that creation controls the entirety of the city and its rules.
