whirligig project

This is my English project on the book “whirligig” it includes a PowerPoint about quotes and figurative language. As well as a new ending chapter segmenting in to a sequel book.

“The new normal”

Brent is at peace with his past and must say goodbye to Maine. Brent is ready to go back to Chicago, he has forgiven himself and he has finished the whirligigs. While Brent is on the bus, he recalls how he started this journey and got to this point. He recalls the party and how all of this happened because he went to some dumb party and how everyone forgot about it by now anyway. But then he tells himself, going to the party wasn’t the worst thing that could have happened because as tragic lea’s death was, he has self-improved a lot on his journey, and he Is like a whole new person now. He recalls what Lea’s mom said to him before he set off on his journey, Lea’s gone, I am learning to accept that. I thought I had nothing I could ask you that would help. You can’t bring her body. Then I thought about her spirit”. This set Brent on his journey to build the four whirligigs around the US.

Brent made it to Chicago after a 21-hour bus ride. It is 6 AM, he hears birds chirping, the silence in the road is peaceful, no one is driving this early in the morning. While Brent walks home from the bus station, thinks about what he will say to his parents, he thinks about what he is going to do today, what life is going to be like again. His life is going to be normal again, well not the way it was, kind of like a “new normal”. A stranger walked by Brent. “Hey there” Brent says as the man walks by and replies “hello”, Brent doesn’t think much of it in the moment, but a couple minutes later he realizes that before he would never talk to a stranger. Maybe his journey really did impact him more than he thought.

When Brent gets home, he sees that while he was gone his parents put a code lock on the door, not knowing the number he naturally guesses the simple numbers, 1234, 9876, etc. But after a couple of tries, he doesn’t get it so in the meantime he goes to a park near his house he used to play at when he was younger to kill the time while his parents wake up. The sun is out but it is still cool, there is a slight breeze, he walks on the freshly paved sidewalk they were working on when brent left on his journey, “I guess they finished that while I was out of town” he says out loud. Brent’s stomach growls, Brent can’t even remember the last time he ate. He walks by a berry bush that was still growing when he left. They are ripe and ready now, so he picks a couple and starts munching on them. He quenches his hunger for the time being, while thinking about what he is going to eat for breakfast. He goes on the swings, he hasn’t been on one since he was 12, he must relearn how to swing, but he quickly gets the motion down and in no time, he starts swinging and having a great time. Before Brent knew it, 45 minutes had passed by, and he was just swinging realizing how much he misses swinging. Brent lost track of time; he starts walking back home hoping that someone is awake by now. Brent walks up to his doorstep and rings the doorbell. “Ding dong!” The bell rings as Brent patiently waits and thinks of how he is going to greet his parents, the door opens, and an elderly lady (about mid 70s) opens the door and both Brent and the lady share a confusing and awkward moment together. The lady speaks up, “why hello there, how can I help you?” “Who are you?” Brent replies confused at who just answered the door. “Oh well I am the homeowner mister” she says as Brent is contemplating what to do and what happened. Did he forget where he lived? Is he at the wrong house? Is this woman just visiting our house? Brent wants answers. “Where are the people who used to live here?” Brent asks, “I have lived all my life, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Brent leaves apologizing for the confusion on his way off the woman’s property. Brent is confused so he walks down his home street. He was at the wrong place. He remembers his house number was 1243 not 1234, so he walks to his old house and… “sold” Brent’s parents moved, but where?

Brent walks up to his house and knocks on the door. Nothing. No answer, the knock echos through the house making a high-pitched noise. Brent tries again, nothing. He decides to open the door and walk in… nothing, it’s an empty house. Brent walks around but it’s just an empty house filled with eh echos of the past. He finds a post card that says “New York city” along with a note “hello Brent, if you are reading this, then I, no we, are sorry. We are moving to New York City. And I know you’re wondering why? Why would we move to New York? Why would we move without me? How did we afford to move? And what happened while you were gone? All these questions will be answered, and by the end you will know. End of what? Turn the post card around.” Brent turns it around and finds a message on the bottom that reads: “go to where the men love to race” Brent leaves with a vast idea of where to go. Until he remembers about a family tradition where Brent’s family and their family friends go to Indiana to watch the Indy 500. And after they would camp at a bridge near the event where Brent and his childhood friend Josh would race pretending to be cars. So Brent has to go on another adventure finding his parents.

Brent realizes that he can’t do this alone again. Brent thinks to himself, who could help him with something like this. He regrets not making as many friends now. But Brent gets a wild idea, an idea he is not expecting will work be he had no other options. He starts walking to where he remembers to be Chazes house. Maybe Chaz feels bad about what happened or maybe heard about what I tried to do, maybe he can help. He goes over there knocks three times. Brent sits in silence, even regretting the idea of coming here, but it’s too late now so he is ready. Chaz opens the door and at the sight of Brent he throws himself at Brent, giving him a hug in gratitude, he apologizes for what he did and tells Brent he was worried about him. Brent accepts the apology, as Chaz invites him in. The house is nice, pearl countertops, white hard wood floors, and leather couches. Chaz comes from a family of money, so naturally his house is nice and big. “So where have you been since the incident?” Brent is surprised at this comment “how do you know about that?” Chaz replies “Briana ran back to find you shortly after you left to apologize for humiliating you like that, but she was too late” “oh” Brent replies as they sit down. “So how can I help you?” Chaz asks in a welcoming way. “You hungry? I’m about to eat breakfast” Brent is hungry but respectfully declines, but Chaz insists. As they walk to the kitchen. “don’t worry my parents are gone for the summer” after hearing this Brent just goes ahead and asks the question. “I need help finding my parents”
