Edibe DNA

1) DNA which also stands for deoxyribonucleic acid is a combination of materials inside a nucleus, that contain genetic information. It’s structure has a double helix shape. The back bones contain strands of phosphate and sugar bonded together. Inbetween is four nitrogen containing bases Adenine, Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine which connect the two back bones. These bases come in pairs and can only go together. For example adenine and Thymine or Quanine and Cytosine.

2) In this lab licorice represented the backbone of DNA, which are made up of sugar and phosphate. The marshmallows represented the four types bases and each type had their own colour for example Adenine was yellow, Thymine was orange, Guanine was green and Cytosine was pink. The toothpicks represented the bond between the pair of bases and the connection they have.

3) Yes I do believe this lab helped me understand DNA structure because all the parts in real DNA were represented. Also doing hand on work really helps me understand how every part of DNA is composed together.
