  2. Gender Equality

    How close are the Winter Olympics to being gender equal?

               The article I chose is about how most of the sports in the Olympics are not gender equal and have many flaws in the gender equality portion of the events. Many of the events have little changes for the women’s events but they still make a huge difference, for example for the cross-country skiing event, the men ski for 50 kilometers while the women ski for only 30 kilometers. Another one of the examples they give in the article is how the women’s ski jumping hill is not as big as the men’s ski hill. This article and problem involves almost every women who participates in the Olympics since its not fair to any of them and it affects all of them. Women are just as capable to do anything just like men are and some of the events shouldn’t be made “easier” for the women just because they are women. I choose this article because it ties into The Friday Everything Changed story well, but also because everything in this article should be noticed by more people and it should be talked about way more. This story ties into The Friday Everything Changed since it shows similar gender equality problems and it’s about how women can’t do what men can do because they are “not capable” or are “not strong enough”.  Just like with the water bucket in The Friday Everything Changed, they didn’t want the girls to take it because they thought it was a mans job or they thought they couldn’t bring it because its a hard job.
