Capturing the tender poetry, tragedy, and simplistic beauty of Watch Over Me by Nina Lacour, this book cover art is fitting for the novel’s contents. Firstly, the pastel and cool-toned colour palette communicate that the grievous story of the protagonist, Mila, is about to unfold. Furthermore, the expression on the subject’s face, presumably Mila’s, on the cover alludes to the discomforts she faces isolated with children with tragic pasts in the middle of the countryside. Seemingly, there are no conflicts or people around her, but the tiredness of her eyes depicts the ongoing suffering she is going through mentally. On the contrary, a slight smile can be seen on her face, implying that she might be experiencing healing and internal growth. Lastly, the flowers that beautifully compliment her flowy hair, confirm this rising inner tranquility.
My interpretation of a suitable cover art for Nina Lacour’s Watch Over Me focuses more on the warmer, happier, and nature-heavy setting. With the use of colors, like brown and yellow, the novel seems more optimistic but still heavy. Adding to this, I included a blurring effect to make the picture seem more dreamlike as majority of the novel is with the protagonist, Mila, dreaming and recollecting events with her peers at the farm. Further, this particular setting on the cover can be one of the sessions Mila and her young orphan students had at their cottage, which is one of the few moments were she felt true happiness. This image also alludes to the beautiful nature imagery that the novel consistently paints. Lastly, I wanted to stick with the minimalistic text and design of the original cover, so I selected plain texts for the title and others.
