Formation of Regions

Arctic

The arctic was formed by the pressure that was built up in the north east of the Canadian shield had pushed the sedimentary rocks upwards to form fold mountains.

Cordillera

The Cordillera is formed when plate collision resulted in the earth’s crust to push and fold the volcanic rock into mountains. This is also cause the formation of the rest of the region such as the plateaus, valleys, and trenches you see today. The mountains look rugged due to the erosion from river and glaciers.

Interior Plains

The Interior was formed by the soils that was brought in by the rivers that came from the Canadian Shield, this is what caused the the layers of sedimentary rock which turned into rolling hills, river valets and flat lands.

Canadian Shield

The Canadian shield was once a volcanic mountain range but overtime, the weathering, erosion and glaciers wore down this area into the flat landscape we have today that contains lakes, wetlands and bare rocks. There is little vegetation there, as the thin soil makes it unrealistic for agriculture.

St Lawrence Lowlands

The Lawrence lowlands is formed by retreating sheets of ice during the last ice age, these ice sheets melted and formed giant lakes. These lakes drained and the shoreline that it created became bluffs.
