My reflections on our units:
Atomic theory:
I think that my strength in this unit was probably naming and identifying compounds. It was the simplest part to understand and it was the concept that I practiced the most. It was one of our first lessons and I remember practicing it with my sister.
My weakness during this unit was probably identifying the different kinds of chemical reactions. I could never memorize the names or how they happened/what they reacted to.
This is the test I’m planning on retaking when we have the choice. I feel that if I studied for this, this is the unit I could easily understand. When the time comes, I’m going to look back at the very first notes and try to work on memorizing chemical reactions.
Bonding:
My strength during bonding was probably drawing and classifying the different bonds and diagrams. I honestly really enjoyed and understood this unit. It was my best. I really liked drawing the different types of bonds, and I found that the ratios were easy to remember.
My weakness during the bonding unit was probably identifying when to use double, triple, etc. bonds. When it was any atom other than hydrogen I didn’t know what kind of double bonds were necessary. I also did not know the exceptions for the atoms that broke the octet rule.
If i were ever to retake this test, those are the two little things I would study and try to understand, however I’m happy with the mark I got for this unit.
The Mole:
I think for my strength during this unit I would have to choose my memorization. After one class, I memorized the avogadro number, the STP number, the SATP number, and when to use them. I think that I also understood pretty well how to convert with moles.
My weakness was probably most conversions to do with mass and volume. When it came to moles, molecules and atoms it was pretty straightforward, but the mass and volume conversions confused me, especially when we weren’t given units for mass.
I’m planning on doing extra work and whatever studying I can do for our next unit so that my mark for the mole test goes up. I wouldn’t retake the mole test because I don’t know if it would do very much for me.
